Night time feeding?

OK, Lucian and his furry mates are all eating 4-5 times a day, every 4 hrs, low carb canned food. The problem is, due to my own health issues and meds, I can't get up to test or feed during the night. At best, midnight is it. So between midnight and 7:30 am, there is no food. They won't eat it if I leave it out, it has to be fresh mixed with water. If there are leftovers, they will BE left over forever, they won't touch them. So now what? This is another reason I was wondering about the No Carb dry food from Young Again, but I can't afford that with no job. Even my 18 yo feral female won't eat the canned once it sits a bit and I swore she would eat anything! She's been known to scarf up a salt and vinegar potato chip that was dropped!

So what do I do about food for when I'm asleep?

If they are hungry, they may eat, though some cats are very resistant.

If the glucose is low enough, eating becomes a drive that generally isn't ignored.

The novelty of a timed feeder may help. (ooh! what's this?)

Putting a bit of something special in it - perhaps Parmesan cheese sprinkles, FortiFlora, etc - may encourage nibbling too.

Maybe walmart (use link above) or Petsmart or even ebay.

You could also try freezing the food and leave it out to defrost. Some members do that who are out working all day and dont want the cats eating all the food by 9am..

In order to use the pet feeder, I would have to lock him up somewhere, I have 3 cats and a 1 bedroom apt, kinda hard, since the other 2 sleep with me.

here's an auto feeder. They have them at Petco, and Petsmart.

.amazon.com/PetSafe-2-Meal-Feeder...

Both Petsmart and Amazon.com are on FDMB's list of affiliate stores :-D By using the link to the store from the FDMB Shop page and making a purchase, FDMB gets a commission which goes towards maintaining this web site :thumbup

Petsafe, the company that makes the PetSafe 5 compartment feeders that many people here use, is also on the FDMB Shop page  It's right next to the Petsmart ad link, or, if you don't see it, click here

You probably get free shipping if you buy the 5 compartment feeder through Amazon.com

Catmate is another brand of popular programmable timed feeders.

Not to worry, I'll buy all I can thru the site. I had to get syringes, NOW, but will order them thru ADW in the future. I did order my meter, etc thru them, just got it today, even though I bought the ReliOn a few days ago, I couldn't wait.

My night meds knock me out for about 8 hrs, I have been known to walk slam into the door frame just trying to get to the bathroom, don't know how safe that is for Lucian!

Just got back, he's hungry, but I'm going to wait for his +7 before he eats again. About 30 min.

Everyone here eats at 7am, 1pm, 7pm and 11pm that's it...I do not leave out food overnight as my gang will leave it until it becomes dust as well as the drooler would hoover it up once the lights go out.

I hear ya!
Don't have a drooler anymore, lost him last March, almost 16 yo Golden, who was my heart. I doubt I will ever have another dog, I can't take it. I lost a female Golden at 15 in 2005. They are all I have had for over 20 yrs, besides my kitties. I carry a bit of an issue with God, for giving animals such short lives. It breaks my heart to lose one.

Anyway, since coming off dry food, they want to eat more often and do every 4 hrs until I go to sleep. After that, there is nothing I can do. Even during the day, they will walk past leftovers from a previous feeding and squall for something fresh. Once they are done with that feeding, they are DONE.

At least, the way Lucian's #'s are running right now, I don't think I have to worry too much about that 7 hr stretch, may have to figure out something else, when they come down a lot.

I'm wondering if you give MORE food when you are feeding them if they will be enough to suffice.

If you are looking for a "dry alternative" to leave out, you could try this. I will warn that it is pricey, but it is raw food that technically should have water added to it, but mine only want to eat it dry.

It does come in other flavors. I found this is the best priced place online to get it, and if you sign up for auto delivery, it's even less money.

None of them finish what they have, only about 80-85% if it. There is always a little leftovers. My feral will clean her plate sometimes, but only if she really likes it, so I think I'm giving enough. They eat the equivalent of 1.25 cans 5.5 oz a day or 2.5 3 oz cans EACH, minus left overs. Should they be eating more? I thought that was about normal. They do get a few nibbles of no carb treats 2-3 times a day, Lucian more often due to shots etc.

I saw a Stella and Chewy's display at Petmania, but didn't notice what was on it. Too bad it doesn't come in Liver, Lucian is crazy for the FD Liver treats and they are much more expensive.

I just saw a product called 'Simply Nourish' Freeze dried liver for dogs, at Petsmart (which I detest). But it's a 5 oz for $9.......I paid $5 for 1 oz for Lucian at Petmania. As much as I hate to, I may have to bite the bullet and let Petsmart have my $$. I know others break up the 'dog' ones for their kitties, cause they are cheaper that way. The stuff you use is still cheaper, ounce for ounce.

My babies like to leave a little in their bowl too and then beg for more. To make them finish it I grind up liver treats and put the powder in a small tub. I then sprinkle literally a pinch on the leftover food and they eat it all up!

Mine stop about 70-75% after they have drank the water out of it and ate most of it, I add a tad more water and they eat more. But mine never want more after that. Sometimes I've tried, when 1 of them left more than I like, to give it to another one and they walk away. It would be easier if they only ate twice a day like some peoples, but I think a lot has to do with the fact that they always ate dry 'at will', many times a day. Every 4 hrs seems to work for them, although they usually start wanting something a few minutes before that. I just don't want to waste any, if they have leftovers, they refuse to come back later and eat them, already been there! Even my feral girl, who will eat just about anything the first time, won't come back and eat the leftovers. What? does the taste disappear? I dunno. Ya know, could be they HAVE gotten most of the flavor out with the water...hmmm? But they refuse to eat it straight from the can and they need all the water they can get, I understand.

Getting ready to try to get a +6 from Lucian......Keep fingers crossed for me.
