Next best Canned Food for diabetes in remission (Wellness?)

Hi guys,

My cat is in remission of his diabetes and has been since April. He has been on an all Fancy Feast canned diet. However, I think it may be giving him issues. I have found blood in his stool twice. I'm thinking he is constipated. He has never had this issue before. He continues to eat normally and seems otherwise normal, so I really don't think it's another issue. My question is....I feed my other two cats Wellness canned. Is Wellness canned a good food for diabetic cats, meaning low carb and grain-free? I'm thinking of switching my diabetic cat back to Wellness canned as he had no issues on that one. TIA!

Wellness is a good food, Mandy, and comes in many low carb flavors. Have you had him checked out to see if his colon looks alright? It isn't terribly common for cats on wet lo carb foods to get constipated, although it happens. I just would want to make sure there is nothing else wrong.

I guess I'm wondering about the fiber content in FF wet food. Any idea? I'm starting to wonder if the fiber is too low for him? (I'm assuming the Wellness low-carb flavors are on the food list on this site. I'll have to check it out.)

I've wondered about his colon too, but from what I have read, it is more watery/diarrhea-type stool with colitis and the cat normally has a very low appetite, which Brad doesn't have. He is certainly eating fine and his stool wasn't watery at all. I noticed the blood in it probably once about a week and a half ago, and again the other day. He has lost weight (he looks great as he was overweight and probably still is a bit) but I atttribute that to his new eating habits, being all canned food and no dry.

I was going to take him to the vet but I worry they will tell me Fancy Feast is low quality and will want to change his food, making his diabetes come back. (I received terrible guidance from the vet in the past in regards to his diabetes which is what led me here). Of course if I suspect a serious issue, I would surely take him, but right now, he does seem okay. If I see the blood again, I will certainly take him.

What would I do if they try to change his food? Most of the vet-type prescribed foods are high in carbs.

You can take one can or bag of their food, open it and then return it and say "He won't eat it, but he will eat this". And the let them look at the ingredients on your Wellness can.

Or if you can be more assertive, just tell them you have been doing fine picking food. You did get your diabetic cat in remission after all...and that you are choosing to feed _______.

I just agreed to disagree with my vet. She likes canned DM; I feed Fancy Feast.

I feed Wellness Chicken or turkey, Merrick BG and Evo 95%. I never feed fish flavors. I also make my own raw food. See catinfo.org for more info on that!

I used to give Morgaine a small amount of psyllium powder to help her with constipation. I believe it was 1/4 tsp to a 1/2 can of a 3 oz can 2x a day. If you think constipation is the problem this might help but add some water to the food. You could also start a little lower (1/8 tsp) and see how it works. I stopped using it after years and years because she began to have loose stools. Be sure to use the powder as it mixes right into the food easily and is basically tasteless. If you have any concern about this, I consulted with Dr. Lisa about this and she said it was fine to use this. I bought it at a local health food store but I am sure you can find it on line. It also helps with hairballs.

I feed Cedric Wellness & Evo. He basically goes most days, as the food is all chicken or turkey flavors, which are helpful in keeping one regular.

My Midora has constipation problems due to birth defects. There were times that I would buy a chicken breast for her, cook it and feed it to her to help. In a pinch, mineral oil will do it and is harmless to cats (and humans, if you need it, but it's think and not very tastey!)
