Good Morning
Our 5 year old cat was Dx yesterday and we started giving him his shots. I have done rescues for 26 years so I know alot but never dealt with diabetes before. I know how to do Sub Q and shots so that's a plus. We are switching him to canned food only which he is not thrilled. I am not sure how much he should be eating at a time ?
The vet dosent want me to monitor him just yet. She will do a 8 hour test soon to see where his levels are. We have Karo syrup in cases he crashes. I am boiling him chicken but still give canned food as well. Was thinking of just making his food but want to make sure he gets what he needs.
He is 5 years old. The vet wants our other cats to lose weight. 2 are 18 one is 21# yes I know it's bad. The 21# only eats dry , so this will be a challenge . I tried putting wet food on top of the dry, he covered it. He isn't the diabetic one so that can be a slow process with him.

Welcome Adam, if you can please fill out your signature
Make sure your signature is up-to-date. Click on your name first
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • Name of insulin
    • DX: date
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

We all monitor our cats, how would you ever know if they ever dropped to low and you had to intervene with food. When you say your vet will do an 8 hour test, I assume you mean a curve test. That is usually a 12 hour test.
I assume she wants you to bring him in for this which will only stress him out and his readings will be higher.

To tell you the truth the members here know more than the vets do when it comes to diabetes, I would have been lost without the help from the members here

Most of us use a human meter such as the Relion Prime because the strips are so much more affordable, since you will be testing multiple times a day and night
You can get it at Walmart

Most likely your vet has the pet meter called the Alpha Trak , the cost of strips will put you in the poor house. I used to use it but got way to expensive.

So if you can fill out the signature that would be great, take a look at mine and the spreadsheet . When you start to test your cat we can help you with it.
You will then want to set up the spreadsheet to fill in his BG when you test him
Take a look at mine or anyone else's
We do this so that if you ever need help with dosing, any thing, we can look at your spreadsheet and see just how the insulin is working
I know it sounds like a lot to take in but believe me , its easy, if I did it you can
If you go to the Feline Health Forum you will see Dr Pierson's Food Chart
Most of us feed Fancy Feast Pate or Friskies Pate, or whatever you see that is under 10 % carbs. You will see all of this on the food chart

Welcome to FDMB. You have already done the first thing to help your kitty. The second right thing you did is find us!
I cannot give dosing advice but after you follow Diane's instructions Please know this...
Diabetes is a controllable disease. Its a learning curve disease, but once you get the hang of it, the whole process is doable.
Since you have been in rescue this will probably be easier for you than it was me lol ;)
I cannot give dosing advice but I can tell you all your answers will be found here! There is a wealth of information here and people to help you digest it. again
WELCOME TO THE BEST SITE ON THE PLANET to help you help your newly diagnosed kitty!:bighug:
