Hey, I'm Judy and I have a newly diagnosed Maine Coon male with Diabetes. My 9 year old boy Chaz was diagnosed a week and a half ago. The insulin injections are easy to do. I have not been able to test his blood as yet but I will asap. A question I have is Chaz seems to not be able to walk up on all four paws. He was a heavy cat...22 lbs and is now 12.7 lbs so he always had a waddle. Now he seems to be walking on the backs of his legs and because we have hardwood floors throughout the house upstairs he has trouble getting grip. Is this a common occurrence in cats with diabetes? My good friend had a cat with diabetes and he walked the same way. Any advice would be great! He has an appointment with the vet on July 25th for a followup and possibly a curve, though if I can learn how to get his blood I would rather do it at home

Hi Judy, welcome to you and Chaz. It does sound like neuropathy. As Deb says, Zobaline is the treatment of choice, that, along with regulation should get Chaz walking upright again

Please do start home testing. It's the best way to achieve regulation. If you need help with that, post on The Health Forum. Here's some info to get you started

Thank-you so much Sharon, if I go to a closer Animal Hospital will they just sell the Zobaline to me if I ask for it?

Also being a Maine Coon he has a ton of long hair tufts that curl out around his ears. I think that is why I'm having a more difficult time finding that spot.

I don't know if vets carry Zobaline, mine didn't. Everyone I know that uses it ordered it online. Keep trying to get the sweet spot. It's right along the very edge of the ear. Also make sure his ear is warm.

Hello Judy, a very warm welcome to you and to Chaz!

Thank-you so much...I'll try again today. Lost a bit of trust giving him a gentle bath last night. He smelled of urine pretty bad. He enjoyed getting brushed after Our household has been crazy for the past several days. My step daughter and two boys arrived on Sunday with their spayed Shepherd Lab mix so besides our unneutered Lab going crazy all the cats disappeared. It takes us a half hour to find Chaz for feedings and insulin...fortunately we were able to ask if their dog could stay elsewhere while they were here. So for the last day it's been much quieter and Chaz has been staying upstairs!

Good luck with the test. If you have any more problems, post on Health Forum. There are more people there that can help.
