My boy, Linus, is also newly diagnosed. He has been on insulin for about 4 weeks. Currently I give him 4 units, twice a day. He also has pancreatitis and is on antibiotics. I started giving him Methyl B-12 for his back leg problems, based on readings here on this message board.
He is a very big fella...20 pounds and is on low carb Friskies canned, which had been his food before diagnosis. He is ravenous and tries to get to the other two cats' food.
I check his numbers at home using a One Touch Ultra ... Nadir has been about 130-150, but it goes up to the mid 200s at other times. It has peaked at near 400.
I am not sure how to feed him...mini.meals? Twice a day? Bites of food with meds? How much total for a day?
I am learning SO from all the posts! Thanx.

Welcome aboard!! You will find a lot of experience here so you found the right place. I have had a diabetic kitty for almost 3 years and I can tell you that I'd have never made it without the people here.
You will find a wealth of information and experience not to mention friends who feel the same way as you do about your kitty! Glad to meet you! cat_pet_icon

How much you feed is based on weight. If y want to gain weight yo fed more, Lose weight feed less.
I feed mine twice a day. Some say feeding small meals throughout the day is better. What you want is to feed consistently every days

When you have a moment, would you put your insulin in your signature, plus any notes about when diagnosed, other conditions, etc

It'll help us give you better feedback.

Linus is doing so well. Could a better coat..softer fur with a less greasy feel to it... Be a result of controlled diabetes?
Do have a question about his RAVENOUS appetite....will he ever not be so hungry? Since he is 20 pounds, I am cutting down on how much he eats...down to 1 1/2 cans of Friskies Pate a day. I was concerned about getting him off dry and decreasing the amount while adjusting to insulin. He wants to eat constantly, and when I do feed him, he wolfs it down. Is this a side effect that will do away? Will I always have to be the food police with Linus and the other cats?

A softer less greasy fur means that some of the insulin is doing it's work and the sugar is getting to the cat's cells. :-D Once cats get better regulated, they becomes less ravenous. I also find if my kitty is in higher numbers she is much more focused on food.

That is good news about becoming less ravenous..it can't happen soon enough.
This message board is such a wealth of information. Better than the info, I love that I feel so much better about Linus' situation...and mine! Thanx for posting answers and relief!
