How do you know if the current dose is too high or too low? Merlin's numbers seem to be jumping around quite a bit and I was wondering if a decrease this evening would be in order...? Am I seeing a bounce? Am I rushing this?

He's on "NPH 1/ Strength" which I assume means the doses I give are actually just half of what they're listed as. (I am unable to get anything else for several weeks because the vet refuses to prescribe anything but this, but will be switching as soon as I'm able to get him seen by a different vet.) Vet's office put him on 3 at diagnosis, and three days later increased to 4, which scared me because of his reaction. I was worried about hypoglycemia and my glucometer had not arrived yet.

He gets food during the day (wet, low and medium carb only, or boiled chicken). No dry.

Should I lower his dose back down to 2.5 U (=1.25) tonight? I'm just a bit discouraged and have little confidence that tomorrow's vet appointment will help much. I'm bringing him in either way because he's been limping really bad on his left front leg since yesterday. A couple of days ago he was playing for the first time in ages and then everything just went downhill. Yesterday and today he's just sleeping, which if fine if he's hurt his leg, but could it be related to the diabetes?? I know about the hind leg neuropathy, but this is the front.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I don’t think you need to decrease the dose but I think if you could get some tests in during all the pm cycles, this would help us see what is happening. many
Any chance you can get a better insulin such as Lantus or prozinc?

I have actually been able to get a short notice appointment with a different vet - on Wednesday - and I already asked if this was possible, so YES. Finally! I will do my best to get more readings.

Fantastic! I would ask for Lantus as a first choice if possible. We can help you with the starting dose once you get the new insulin. Don’t let them give you Vetsulin. It’s not a good cat insulin.
And those pm tests will be very helpful in deciding the starting dose of the new insulin.
Looking forward to seeing your update after the new vet visit. :)
