Hi, I'm new to this board after having had my kitty DeNiro diagnosed with diabetes just over a week ago. I rescued him from a pound a few months ago, and since getting him home he had been losing weight....he also battled a dreadful flu for almost 2 months and is likely FIV+. He is a gorgeous boy who obviously had a home at some stage in his life, but had clearly been living on the street for some time, came in covered in battle scars and fleas. Last week after bloods/urines etc, he was diagnosed as diabetic. He started on 1 1/2 units of Lantus twice daily last Wednesday. I'm trying to read up as much as I can to do his first curve test at home on Friday. The vet was worried that because of the scarring to his ears it would be hard to get him to bleed, but I've got my fingers crossed as I want to avoid the stress of him going into hospital for the day, as well as the cost. My biggest concern at the moment is he is very skinny. I tried him on the vet's prescription diet food, but he didn't like it, so i'm sticking with supermarket tinned foods for the moment....I've been giving him lots of stuff with jelly and chunks of fish....is that ok? I see pates are preferred but at the moment he doesn't always prefer them, though he is eating them about 1/3rd of his meals. I live in Australia so the names of some foods etc may be different here. He seems to be going ok so far...a little improvement, but it's only been 5 days. My biggest concern is when I will be away from home for more than 12 hours. My vet is only open til about 5 on weekends, which means if I'm out later than that on say a Saturday, he'd have to spend the night there, and I don't like that idea, but don't think it's something I'll be able to avoid?? They don't have one now,but soon will have a vet nurse that spends the night with the animals, though I don't think they'd let me come get him til the next morning when they officially re-open. His age had to be guessed, and vet thinks he's only about 2, which seems very young to be diabetic. I'm so glad I found this board....I love DeNiro and want to see him live a long and healthy life. Any tips/advice/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
