My 13 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and I'm wanting to make sure he's on a diet that will be best for him. He has been fed Purina Naturals dry food nearly his entire life, with ocassional treats in the form of chicken/steak/other meats I would have for dinner (always made separately without seasonings and such) but on my way home from the vet I stopped by and picked up a couple cans of Fancy Feast Classic pate flavors because I had seen that as a recommendation both on this forum and another while in the waiting area.
He seems to have immediately latched on to them, and honestly seems to love them. My question is basically, what should I be feeding him besides the canned food, or is a pure canned food diet okay?
Also, is it okay if I feed him cooked meats still during my dinner time? (I only ever give him a very small portion, less than an ounce)
Before his diagnosis and weight loss, he used to weigh about 11 pounds, which my vet has always told me was very health for his size. He now weighs just under 8 pounds, so I'm not sure if I should aim towards having him gain weight or not as well. Should I follow the feeding guide on the cans, or should I try to feed him a bit more to help him gain a bit of extra weight?
All of this is quite new to me obviously, so I really don't know what the best route is, and unfortunately my vet didn't have all too many answers. He recommended a Royal Canin dry food called 'glycobalance' and to not give my cat wet food at all, but then told me wet food would be a good option only after asking about others recommendations online so I'm not entirely sure what to believe right now.
Any help would be very welcomed, and if I need to give any more info I'll do my best!
