Hello!

One of my best friends told me how wonderful this forum is so here I am!

My 14 year old cat, Frank, was diagnosed with diabetes in June 2022, I started him on 1 unit of insulin on July 8th and have been charting everyday since then. I did chart a few days before he was on insulin and we tried low carb diet food only - that didn't work at all.

His diet is one flavor (chicken) of Fancy Feast Pate and occasionally tuna. Before his diagnosis of course he was eating kibble and occasionally wet food.

His glucometer is the One Touch Ultra 2 so I know it can test a little lower than a pet glucometer.

The first appointment when we got him started insulin, the vet said 1 unit probably would be too low given he is a large cat and weighs 12.1lbs (around 5.5kgs) (which is slightly low for him actually), however, within less than a week of being on 1 unit, he was consistently below 8 mmol/L and the vet said to me in person at first to give half a unit at 8 mmol/L or under, then a few days later said give no insulin at 8 mmol/L or under via email.

Since the vet said to not give him any insulin at 8 mmol/L or under, he has only had insulin one time in six days when he was at 10.6 mmol/L.
For the past 6 days, outside of the one morning he was at 10.6, he has been between 5.3 and 8.1.

I feel like this is a very quick turn around since he only started insulin on July 8th and today is August 1st. I do not suspect the Somogyi effect though, from what I have read, his numbers aren't reflecting that, he doesn't have high numbers in the morning and when he did, they were high all the time.

I am just looking for general thoughts and opinions. I am also wondering if this is likely early remission? I have read that under 5.5 I think, is where they want to be for a strong remission and I am committed to that. But what is the range he should be in without insulin for strong remission?
2 weeks between 3.5 and 5.5? Or 4 weeks between that range?

Thank you so much and I tried to attach his chart I made in excel but it wouldn't allow me to but I was able to post photos in a reply below.

Amy xx

It will also explain how to use the spreadsheet

Take a look at mine at the bottom of my signature tap on Tyler's spreadsheet to take a look at it. He's in remission since 1-24-21 with the help of all the members here and the advice they gave me. You won't see many tests for 2022 because I don't have to test that much .
On the top of my spreadsheet tap on 2020 and you will see more testing
After you fill everything out I will tag a few members for you

AMPS - means AM Pre Shot the first test you take in the AM ,you need to withhold food 2 hours before testing so it's not food influenced

Units is where you would put how much insulin you gave
+1 is one hour after giving insulin
+2 two hours after giving insulin
+3 and so on until you get to PMPS - PM pre shot withhold food 2 hours before testing

+1 same as AM

We don't give times because we are all in different time zones that's why we use the + numbers
We also get some more tests in after AM and PM to see how the insulin is working and how low Frank is dropping
We don't increase or decrease by going by the Pre Shots we go by how low Frank is dropping

We adjust the doses by 0.25 units at a time
Also insulin should be given the same time for the AM and PM shots
