My 10-year-old cat was diagnosed a week ago. His BS at the time was 531. He is now on one unit of insulin twice a day (for about a week).
Right now, in the middle of the dosing schedule, his BS was 341. He is lethargic, wobbly, etc. Is there anything I can do at home to even him out?

Hi,
There are lots of things that you can do to help your cat. Are you testing at home? I'm guessing that the 341 is a mid-cycle test that you did at home, about 6 hours after his last shot. Is that right? If so, its not too bad for a newly diagnosed cat. Do you have other numbers that you can share? Can you also tell us which insulin your vet has given you?

WRT the wobbliness, did your vet mention diabetic neuropathy? When the bg is high, the nerves to the back legs of many cats are compromised. This does improve as the diabetes becomes better regulated, but it can also be helped with methyl-B12. These pills can be found at most health food stores.

Does your cat have any other medical problems right now that might b affecting his bg? A bladder infection or infected teeth? Is he perhaps on antibiotics? These will also make it more difficult to even out his numbers.

Still new to this, but have one question, are you testing his urine ketones?

Others will be along to help, Appy has been a great help to me. Hoping Carl or Lori stop by.

Pulling for you. You've found the right place!

Hi and welcome to the best place in the world for newly diagnosed sugarcats (and their people).

There are hundreds of people here who would love to help you, from all over the world. Can you tell us a little more about your kitty and about you?

Can you tell us which kind of insulin kitty is on?
Can you tell us how much he weighs, and what kind of food he is currently eating?
What symptoms did he exhibit that made you think "I need to get him to the vet NOW?"
Were any other conditions found by the vet when the diagnosis was made?

You are hometesting? If so, that's the first and most important step towards a healthy and happy kitty.
Do you dose him on a every twelve hour schedule?
Does he eat at specific times of the day, or does he free-feed?

If you can fill in those blanks, we'll be better equiped to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Hope to hear back soon!
