Our kitty, John Denver, began acting awfully strange last week. We took him to the vet (I was fearing the worst) and he was diagnosed with diabetes. It took him a few days to get back to normal, but he's getting used to the injections and frequent blood testing. Finally getting his appetite back, too!

We found this message board and it has so far been INCREDIBLE. I am so grateful to have this information and a community of supportive folks to help guide us through this.

John Denver turns 11 in October. I'm working on entering in all of our data on insulin injections and glucose levels into the spreadsheet I found here--we think we're doing everything correctly, but would love any advice people might have.

Just wanted to introduce ourselves and thank you all for running this valuable resource!

wow you guys really jumped right into it!! Way to go! This is a really supportive place full of helpful people!

One thing you could do is set up a signature like you see below our posts. Click on your name at the top right corner and choose signature. Add info such as your pets name, date diagnosed, insulin type and dose, food you're feeding, type of glucose meter... And once you get the spreadsheet setup you can add a link to that as well.

We added the information to the signature and entered in the data that we have in the spreadsheet.

Just looking at your spreadsheet.... If uou post on the ProZinc forum the experienced folks on there may recommend you try a slightly lower dose. I'm not a ProZinc user, but you're getting some low preshot numbers. It would be helpful if you could get a few more mid cycle numbers around 6-7 hours after the shot. That's when ProZinc tends to be at its lowest. Next time you are home all day a curve would help too.

Thank you for the advice.

Based on everything I have read here (and Dr. Pierson's site), I agree that we might need to step down the dosage. I'll chat with our vet about it. He is just now getting back his old appetite, so I think part of the reason some of those pre-shot numbers are so low is because he's not eating as much.

We will test him at the midpoint between his morning and evening shots today. He's also had more of a normal appetite the last 24 hours or so. We had been feeding him a dry food prior to diagnosis (and I am so upset that we did that to him!), so the switch to a low-carb food would also indicate a need to step back his dose.

We're still trying to adjust to the new schedule! I test him at about 6:45 or 7:00 each morning. He usually eats some in the middle of the night, and I encourage him to eat after that morning test. We've been giving the shots at 7:30 am/pm.
