Newly diagnosed Bud, need food help

My 12 year old Maine Coon, Bud, was diagnosed with diabetes this past Saturday. I had noticed he was losing weight and his fur became matted. I'm afraid I didn't get a number of his glucose reading as I was on information overload. The vet is giving Bud a month with diet change before starting him on insulin. The vet recommended Royal Canin diabetic dry food, which of course I bought. Then I came here and am reading he should be on wet food, which would make him one happy kitty anyways. My problem is this, I have 6 cats. While cost is not really an issue, of course I'd like to save money if I could. So I'm trying to find the most economical way to feed 6 cats all wet food. I should remove all dry food, correct? It looks like Fancy Feast is the choice of most users here, but I wanted to get opinions on Friskies pates. Also, how many cans would I need to feed 6 cats a day (using Friskies or Fancy Feast)? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
I have 7 cats and all of them are fed Friskies canned food. Also, check the prices at Sams & Walmart. I usually find the best prices at these two stores.
 
I feed both of my boys (only one diabetic) mostly the Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets. It's low carb, low phosphorus, higher protein, affordable for multiple cats, and doesn't contain red meat (Mikey is allergic) or seafood.

Catinfo.org is a great site about feline nutrition and also includes a food chart of most commercially available wet foods. For diabetics, you want anything less than 8-10% calories from carbs, the lower the better (first Column C). It's safe to feed all your kitties and is better for them.

You can also return the prescription food for a refund and just tell your vet that you cat won't eat it.

Out of curiosity, (I realize all cats have different food intake needs) but how many cans do you give them a day?

Thanks everyone for the responses! This is all so overwhelming!
 
Roughly 6 oz per day, divided into 2 or more meals works for the average 8 pound cat. Adjust up or down as body condition warrants it.
