Pumbaa

Very Active Member
Just wanted to say "hello" from the mom of newly diagnosed, 8-1/2 year old, male juvenile delinquent, Pumbaa.

He had lost weight quickly and was eating like an army. His blood glucose when tested last Monday was 336. There were some ketones in his urine, not terribly high, but some.

Fortunately, by accident, when I noticed the weight loss, I started feeding him more protein, in the form of steamed fish and canned salmon and ground, cooked chicken (not cat food, people food with no carbs). He started ignoring his dry food and concentrated on the fish and chicken. This was 3 days before I got him into the vet, after I researched what could have caused his weight loss, etc.

In lieu of immediately starting with the insulin, I am now switching him over to raw only, but mixing lo-carb canned in with the raw to make it more palatable. (I'm using EVO turkey and chicken formula which boasts that it has less than 7% carbs. I had tried the Instinct frozen chicken medallions, but was not comfortable with the large bone fragments.)

Pumbaa and his feline friend, Larry, used to be fed 1/4 can of cat food (each) in the morning, and always had that nasty dry food to nibble on all day. Larry misses his dry food, but this diet will be good for both of them. I'm a big softee, so both the cats would frequently get protein from my plate, mostly cooked chicken.

I don't really have any questions right now, just have massive reading to continue doing (I have been all over the catinfo.org website, as well as many other websites regarding feline diabetes, and my brain is about to explode with information), and have been amassing supplies I will need, and learning how to use them.

I will be home-testing the blood glucose levels as well as for ketones in the urine. Haven't done so yet because the vet said it would take about a week to see results from the dietary change. Pumbaa does not do well at the vet, and during our visit last Monday, he bit me which required a Doctor visit for me, to get antibiotics and my tetanus shot updated, as well as filling out an animal control bite report and now having Pumbaa in quarantine/on house arrest until next week. It's okay, I've had him since he was 5 weeks old and he's always been an indoor-only cat, but I don't think he likes wearing the black-and-white-striped prison garb. ;-)

Unfortunately, with 2 cats sharing a litter box, and a Border Collie who likes to "snack" on the contents of the litter box  , the litter box is a covered model and wedged between a closet door and a piece of furniture, with the entrance facing the wall. This is not going to make it easy for me to collect urine, that is for sure! nailbite_smile And Pumbaa is a major wiggle-butt, so collecting his blood for the blood glucose test is going to be interesting, too.

I am very happy to join this forum and be able to read what others have gone through and their recommendations, as well as have a place where I can ask questions when they arise. But I'm sorry that all who joined this forum did so due to the illness of their pet. :(

Thank you, JT (and Trouble).

I'm now making my way through these boards and reading so many interesting posts that I have a slew of bookmarks to refer to, just from these boards.

I feel so "not alone" dealing with this now. Kudos to everyone for what they have shared due to their experiences!

Ask anything you can think of to ask. Chances are you'll get many more than "one" answer. The board is primarily a "diabetes" site, but most of us have non-diabetic kitties too, and all sorts of experience with non-diabetes conditions.

And, I'd be willing to bet that if you conducted a poll, even though we may have joined due to the illness of our cats, it'd be close to unanimous that people would say that feline diabetes was a blessing in disguise, and that joining the board was the best decision we could ever have made. This place is beyond incredible.
