Howdy all

My baby Tasha was diagnosed 3/31/11 with FD, she is also hyperthyroid. Her blood glucose was 539 at the vet, I know it will be elevated there, but doc said anything over 200 is very elevated. Her urine glucose was 1000 mg/dl. We started her on 1.5 units Lantus BID, we are also switching her food from Purina One dry to Friskies wet. I got alot of great info here yesterday regarding what types of food to switch her to.

We are learning how to home monitor her levels hopefully it goes better than this morning! Those teeth hurt!! :lol: I'm still really confused about the feeding schedule, and have gotten confusing input from her vet. (tech anyway).

ETA: I followed the spreadsheet link in another post, but when I opened it on google there was nothing there. Also what does +4,+5 etc mean? Is that the number of hours since the last test?

No experience here with FD and Hyper-T but I think some people here do.

Lantus is great. 1.5 units BID is a little more than what this board generally recommends. The typical starting dose is 0.5 units or 1 unit twice a day. PS is the pre-shot blood glucose number. AM and PM tells you if it was the morning or evening pre-shot.

The + numbers indicate how many hours after the insulin shot at the blood glucose level was taken. Example: +6 244 means that 6 hours after the insulin shot the blood glucose level was at 244.

Do you already have a glucometer? I'm glad that you're switching to wet and testing. Generally speaking the BGs will come down on their own because of the change from dry to wet food, but with Hypert involved, your cat's metabolism is in overdrive and she will probably metabolize the insulin faster.

I haven't had a hypert FD kitty, but have been owned by five HyperT kitties. Some who took Tapazole pills, one that used the ear cream and one that got the I-131 treatment. How regulated is Tasha's HyperT?

I feed all of my cats four times per day because I work close to home. I know many people who feed more often like I do, smaller meals throughout the day, but there are some who feed just twice per day. I think it's something you'll figure out as you hometest and get those +4 and +5 (four/five hours after the shot), you'll learn what makes your girl feel most comfortable.

Have you been over to the Lantus ISG to read some of the information on Lantus insulin and how to use it?

Tasha's hypert is very well regulated, she's been on Methimazole for over a year now.

Thanks for the info on the spreadsheet, I'll have to see if I can get it to work. I found the link in the lantus stickies, but that one didn't work either. What I've been reading makes sense now +2 etc.

Ta did really good for her first psbs (paw stick blood sugar)-(I work in a hospital :smile: ) last night, but this morning was another matter,she didn't have her daddy here to help calm her.

My guess is the dosage of lantus is that high because her sugar was off the charts in her urine. No keytones though thank goodness.

Sorry I'm bouncing around on topics, I'm new at both diabetes and message boards :lol: .

ETA: I do have a glucometer, Alpha Trax-- It was ordered and in before I found out I could use reg glucometers. :roll: go figgure- :lol:
 
She likes her ears petted, but I don't think she would go for an ear prick. She may be 10 or so pounds, but she is a LARGE cat.

I just tried to re test, but I can't get enough blood. No bites this time though
