Daisy was diagnosed today as diabetic. She had ketones in her urine and multiple infections in her body. She’s on an extended release antibiotic and I’ll start her daily insulin injections tomorrow. Anyone experienced this level of seriousness with a good outcome?

Jones was diagnosed after 3 months of pancretitis and IBD. He lost 1.5kgs of weight in about 4 months. He was very ill and then the diagnoses if diabetes due to the medications for the IBD.

He is still here and doing well considering. People live with diabetes and have good lives - our kitties can too.

Was she diagnosed as DKA?

I’m not sure what that means but she has ketones in her urine.
 
With ketones they should have hospitalized her. Be sure to keep her very hydrated and make sure she eats. You can buy strips at the pharmacy that measure ketones. Anything over a trace bring her back to the vet.

I am going to assume no...but you might want to pick up some ketone testing strips at your local pharmacy. A drop of pee is all you need. Anything over trace should be seen by the vet.
 
No ketones/DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis) experience here either, but if that is what it is then hydration, food, antibiotics and insulin are all really important. I would ask your vet to clarify the diagnosis and the ketone reading (or you can include the test results here...blur out your personal info).

If that is the case and you have problems with any of these (e.g. Won't drink, won't eat, problems shooting insulin, problems giving antibiotics or vomiting), please post in the main health forum asap with "DKA" in the title so that folks who have dealt with it directly can help.
