Hello!

This is my first post on this community chat forum...my name is Jessica and my 11 year old male orange cat is Simba. Simba was diagnosed in July 2012 after I noticed weight loss, increase in urination and water intake. Simba went into remission July 2015; but now we're back on insulin as of July 2016.

Simba was on Lantus 2x daily, fed Hills DM dry food in the morning (because THAT vet said it was good for his teeth) and fancy feast classic in the evening. I found a new vet for this round as I could not afford my previous vet...As of July 2016, Simba was taking ProZinc 2x daily, but the vet told me to decrease insulin to 1cc 1x daily (evening time). My new vet requested I check his blood glucose levels throughout the week. I purchased the I-Pet Glucose Meter and on August 27, 2016, I started monitoring his glucose...which is quite confusing for me as my previous vet told me not to monitor Simba's glucose. I hope to find some helpful information about BG readings and proper insulin dosages/checks. My vet says Simba may be on his way to remission, but was not informative of what I should be doing during certain BG levels.

Hi Jessica welcome to you and Simba. It's great that you are checking Simbas BG levels. That's the best way to keep him safe and to see how well the insulin is working. If you'll set up a spreadsheet, it will help you, your vet and us to see how Simba is doing and thus better able to guide you in dosing.

If you need help setting it up, just ask and someone will help you.
Prozinc is a good insulin, and should be dosed twice daily. Here is the protocol

If you have any questions, post them on the Main Health Forum or the ProZinc forum.

Welcome
ProZinc is a twice daily dosed, not once a day. Also insulin is dosed in units, not cc.
What syringes are you using? I ask since you were using Lantus which is a U100 (100 units per cc) insulin while ProZinc is a U40 (40 units per cc).
If you draw the ProZinc up to the 1 unit marking on a U100 syringe you are only drawing up 0.4 units of ProZinc. U100 syringes have orange needle caps while U40 syringes have red needle caps

Thank You!! I'm in the process of opening a new gmail account and will post as soon as I can.

Hi Jessica and Simba, and welcome to FDMB!

From looking at your SS it does seem that Simba is able to produce some insulin of his own, although the test results are somewhat erratic at this point. (Perhaps he is producing insulin intermittently).
As others have said Prozinc is usually given twice a day. It may be that reducing the dose would enable you to give shots twice daily and keep insulin in Simba's system for longer (as long as his preshot blood glucose level warrants being given insulin.... ;) )

As Sharon has suggested above, do post on the Main Health Forum or the Prozinc/PZI forum for more advice.
