Hi!

My Samantha is just newly Dx in late March of this year. She is either 18 or 19 years old, I didn't have her as a kitten, the aunt who had her couldn't remember if she was born in 99 or 2000. The vet has her down as 19, which I am wondering if it is right because I have several people say she looks good for a 19 year old cat. She stay at the vets for a week at first trying to get her dose right, the vet said her numbers were all over the place, but they started her on 1 and 1/2 units, twice daily. The vet did a curb on her about a month later and raise it to 2 units, twice daily, she started in the 500's and would be in the 200's at the bottom of the curb. Recently had a bladder infection and I took her to a emergency vet clinic, her numbers 466 7 hours after shot. Took to her regular vet a week later, the vet raise the dose to 2 1/2 units, twice daily, having a number in the 300 at that time.

She is on Prozine now 2 1/2 units twice daily, Hill's prescription diet W/D dry out all day, Fancy Feast Broths twice a day, mostly just drinks the broths, and a few treats for after the shot since I haven't gotten good enough to where she doesn't jump when I try to get her shot. I know bad on my part. I also give her a teaspoon of pumpkin. There are two other no diabetic cats in the house Larry and Daryl, both 9 year grey tabbies. The boys are on Hill's Prescription I/D dry and can, Daryl is the only one who will eat the can food, Larry is mega colon. I do give the boys 1 to 2 broths a day and they mostly just drink the broth.

I really nervous about all this. My vet didn't mention anything about doing daily BG checks before the shot, and mostly he said just to get her to eat, we were having a little trouble getting her to eat the dry food at first. We try giving tuna once, she loved it the first time but then wouldn't eat again. I thinking maybe cause she is so up in age. Don't know.

So I just nervous about giving her the shots, let alone getting doing BG tests on her, I haven't master how to give her shot to her without her jumping most of the time. Any idea what meter should I get to try?

Also she seems really thirsty most of the time, and twice she has been given, by a vet, IV fluids for dehy, once for the bladder infection and a cold in April. She seems to prefer to drink water off the floor of the tile shower, but likes edges and sides of bowls/cups for drinking. I not sure what to do to get her enough water. She wouldn't eat the can food when we started, even with a little chicken broth in it. Seems to be eating the dry better now, not as hard to get her to eat it now.

With the bladder infection she had some sugar in the urine but no ketos. Also I have watched her eat her dry food and she seems to eat the dry food whole, sometimes crunching it.

Welcome. Daily bg tests are your best way of making sure your cat is safe and dose is appropriate. Dosing is not a set and forget. Dosing needs change. Sometimes quickly. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.

I like the Alphatrak 2 meter but the strips are expensive at about a dollar each. Most here use a human meter such as the Walmart Relion Micro or confirm meter. If you want a shopping list let me know.

Part of the problem is the perscription dry kibble which is too high in carbs. Most of us feed a low carb wet food such as fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. There are only a small handful of dry foods that are appropriate for a diabetic cat. The food you are feeding is about 15% carb. You really want to keep it to under 10 percent carb (under 7 is better). Feeding wet food will also satisfy some of the thirst, esp if you add a little water in.

My cat mango was on dried food all his life and he developed diabetes. I switched him over to wet food only and within three months he was in remission. he does not ever get the prescription food there is nothing in there to help your cat. you need to put your cat on wet food only just like they said Fancy Feast is great mango loves it

Ok, thanks all for responding.

I got a Redion confirm today, nervous about testing on her but I guess I will give it a try tonight. She doesn't have much hair on her ears so I can see where the vessel is, I go from between the vessel and the edge of the ear right? I don't do the shot sometimes right and she jumps with I stick her so I am nervous trying to take BG. Then nervous with changing the Prozine as the numbers change on my own. How will she react to having a prink on her ear, sometimes it is hard to get the shot in to keep her still long enough. I think she knows when I am coming with the shot.. ;0)

Ok, is it the same Carbs count in the web Hill's Prescription W/D can as well as the dry? I put a little can out of the W/D to see if she might go for it but of course not yet.

I have read on the information on switching to can food and wonder what you thought of the FortiFlora, Young Again Cat Food, and Halo's Liv A Littles? I'll get some FF classic at the store and see if I can get her to eat it.

Might drive you crazy with questions, I think I have my vet latly. ;0)

oh he's on wd? I thought it was MD.... Hills wd is 25% carb! Definitely stay away from that! It is not intended for diabetic cats at all! I don't know what the wet wd carb count is but I'm guessing much too much as well. Definitly get the fancy feast.

Yes you poke the outer edge of the ear. Here's a diagram.

I use FortiFlora to get my underweight cat to eat and to disguise the flavor of some joint supplements. Expensive but it serves its purpose. I leave out a little Young Again Zero carb mature for my diabetic in addition to feeding fancy feast classic twice a day. Small amounts though because if she over eats it gives her the runs. She does like it though and it's low in carb.

Here's a link to the wet food food chart.

Well, that didn't go well at all... sigh.. I got a poke, but I think she felt it, but I couldn't get it to bleed enough and she didn't like me messing with her ear either. She kept putting her ear out of my hands and folding it up and moving away.. This is going to be hard to do..

Give a treat for every attempted test, successful or not, so she associates it with good feelings.

Try warming her ear with a rice sock, just pour a little uncooked rice in a sock, knot it up and microwave for 15-20 seconds. Make sure it won't burn. I rub it over Idjit's head, both ears, and chin before really warming the selected ear. He would sometimes purr when I was rubbing it around. It really helped get the blood drop.
