Newbie. Schedule insulin around your life.

This might sound like a dumb question but it is killing me...

If your cat needs an insulin shot every 12 hours. How do you all do to go somewhere? Travel, go to dinner or anything else?

I do not have anyone that lives close by to come give her a shot.

It does restrict you some. I think the best way to figure out when you are usually home and pick that 12 hour span. Say you leave for work at 8am every day and get home at 6. So plan to test and shoot at 7am and 7pm. You can go out after 7pm at night. You can vary the times by 15 -30 minutes if you allow for that the next shot. The Lantus forum users will be able to tell you exactly how that works. For traveling, some people have a vet tech come by and test and shoot. They often are happy with outside work and they are experienced. If you want to post your city and state, maybe someone lives nearby and would be willing to exchange diabetic pet care.

At first, it does seem overwhelming and like it will just control your life. But it is doable and the more you test and shoot and keep track of the numbers, the more you feel like you have some control over this thing. Be patient with yourself; you just started and look at what you have learned already!
 
Thanks for your kind words. I know that all will get better but the expense of the hospitalization and everything else add up to the pain of having to draw blood from her everyday (i will get better at that also I hope). I also have another cat that has not reacted kindly to her coming back from the hospital.

I live in Houston (Montrose area) in Texas.

You don't 'draw' blood....you just prick the ear and get a little drop.

Only said that in case you are thinking you have to use a syringe like
they do at the vet when a full blood chemistry workup is done.
It's not like that.

With Smokey, we sometimes took him with us. He was a good traveler and I have
a Subaru station wagon. He had his litter box, bed, food & water in the car.

So if we were going to someone's house say for dinner, or out to dinner, I would
just excuse myself and go out to the car and give his shot.
 
As far as travel goes, we just pack Max (our sugarcat) up and haul him with us. At first he hated being in a vehicle, but I could hardly blame him, since we are at the very least his third home. Now he loves to see his carrier come out as it means he gets some alone time with mom and dad.

We have a pet-sitter that looks after the drooler and the 10 non-diabetics but Max travels with us. My husband is a musician so if I'm going to go with him, Max just goes along. However, right now with the weather as cold has it has been in Nebraska I have elected to just stay home with him.

Granted Max is now in remission, so I don't have to worry about timing his shots, but I just feel better to have him with us, and not take the risk of him getting into and eating something that isnt good for him. (Like the dog's food).

She came back with the smells of the hospital and the civvie is reacting to those smells,
they will wear off. If you are an early riser you can give the first shot at 6:00 or even 5:30
and then you can still have a somewhat early evening. (5:30 or 6:00 evening)

I work from home and we found out our Payne reacts better to shots t.i.d. which gives
us the whole evening for dinner/movie. (but we need to be home by 10:00-10:30 :)
It does get better with time .... all of it! Hang in. And you're not drawing blood, you are
pricking for a tad and yes, blood, lancets, needles are all yuk! but you are saving your
kits life. Remember that this is SOMETHING you have control over, with a disease that is
sometimes? not in our hands ......
 
As others have said, you will find a 12/12 schedule that will work with your life style. I personally choose to get up early every morning and give Oscar his shot at 6am because then I can have my entire evenings open after 6pm for concerts, dinners, etc with friends when need be.
