Hi Pip
I use the BD 3/10cc 31 gauge syringes - 11ml.
I can't get any syringes marked with half units in Australia and the postage costs more than the syringes to have them sent from the US but I find it easy enough to measure 0.25 increments with these. I have good close up vision but those that don't find a magnifying glass helps.
I would definitely go up a gauge or two if I were you - a finer needle means less annoyance for kitty.
As for the length of the needle that is a personal preference thing but many people find there's less chance of giving a fur shot with a shorter needle, assuming that you're not shooting IM. I'm assuming you're shooting subq and making a little skin tent to do so. Some people find that with the longer needles they go right through the tent sometimes and shoot the insulin out the other side. If you ever think you've done that DO NOT shoot again unless you're very sure that Rupert got no insulin at all. If you don't know how much went in you risk overdose by shooting any more. You just need to mark it on your ss as a fur shot, everyone does it here and there.
I don't find I have too much trouble with air bubbles but I read a trick for them on the board somewhere the other day that works a treat. After you have drawn your insulin (more than you need) and done the flick to get the air bubbles to the top draw a little air into the syringe. The air you've drawn into the syringe joins with any bubbles at the top and then it all shoots out when you adjust for the dose you wanted.
