Hi everyone. I apologize for asking so many questions.

My cat uses Lantus 100, 0.5u bid. My Vet gave me 3/10 1/2" 28G.

Where can I find the best syringe prices? Which brands should I stay away from?

Thanks,
N

Re: Newbie. Question about syringes! ?

Everybody will have an opinion!! I use Hocks (see the button at the top of the board) house brand syringe, GNP. I've linked the ones I use.

How many syringes do you buy at once?

How much insulin?

Thanks.

Sienne is right. You'll get lots of different answers. I use Monoject 31g, 3/10cc, short needle with 1/2 unit markings that I order from Hocks. I usually buy two boxes of 100 a a time; I buy Lantus solostar pens at Costco (5 pens, 3 mls each) for $184. You just insert the syringe needle into the soft part and then draw your dose. Keep them in the frig at the recommended temp (see the sticky on storage and handling of lantus); they don't expire for a long time but once you start using one, you will get at least 28 days out of it but many people get longer. You can also order on line from canadadrugsonline (I think); you need a prescription but you probably have to have one for costco, too.

I usually buy 2 boxes of 100 syringes at a time. I often buy my strips at Hocks, as well, and will often put together an order so I qualify for free shipping.

Most of us buy Lantus in the Solostar pen vs. a vial. A vial contains 10 ml. A box of pens contains 5 pens, each holding 3 ml. The pens end up being more economical for a variety of reasons. First, the manufacturer recommends that you discard any unused insulin after 28 days. Most people here will use there Lantus longer although some of us, discard closer to that 28 day point than others. If you're using a vial, chances are you will be discarding a fair amount of insulin. Also, drop a vial, you lose everything. Drop a pen, you have lost far less insulin.

A box of Solostar pens runs around $200 give or take, at a discount pharmacy (e.g., Costco, Sam's Club vs. Walgreens which costs more than $200). Prices of Lantus will vary by city, as well. I'd call around to get prices. Most places will not sell one pen -- they'll only sell a box. If the cost for a box of pens is prohibitive, call around to hospitals that have outpatient pharmacies. They will often sell a single pen because they are also supplying the hospital and have to break the boxes up, anyway. I think a single pen runs around $40.

I just Googled to see what the vials cost. A quick search looks like they run between $110 - $130 but I don't know if that's a reliable price.
