Our cat Shae is 2. She is underweight and was diagnosed in August. The vet ran complete senior panel and said diabetes was her only problem aside from inflamed intestines.

We started at 1 unit and are now up to 2.5 and her blood sugar is still running 450ish preshot. We only give her low carb canned food too.

The vet said to keep checking and keep increasing her dose but I am discouraged.

Any suggestions?

Are you testing her blood at home? What kind of numbers do you get before the shot and then midway through the cycle? Is the wet food pate?

Numbers before 460. Numbers middle....we have only done 1 to be honest and it was 300ish. Food is 9 Lives meaty pate, usually super supper. We are testing at home. The vet suggested doing a curve but we haven't done that either. Hopefully Sunday.

A curve would be very helpful - it'll give you an idea of how low the insulin takes her or whether she is high and flat. Some cats do need more insulin than others. Some other possibilities: Do you sure test before feeding? Are you rolling the insulin to mix it?

We have a protocol and beginner's guide that may give you some ideas. They are in my signature in blue.

The vet said her intestines were swollen but thought they would get better as the diabetes got under control. They are much less swollen but her abdomen still feels a little rigid to me. She has never vomited or shown any signs of distress like I would expect from pancreatitis.

And yes we roll the insulin before we give it to her, never shake.

Do the curve and give us some numbers to work with, and we'll see if we can help.

We have a great color coded spreadsheet that lets you share your numbers with the vet and us, and is a great tool for you to see patterns. The directions are here:

If you need help setting it up, just ask.

You might read through some of the other posts on this page and check out the spreadsheets to see how others are doing.
