I AM!! but rather new to this all as well... I'll catch up on that post from PZi....

EDIT**

Hello fallow Canadian!

So i read through that other post. My Tony is on Caninsulin as well and started out on 2units in the AM and 2 in the PM. You definitely want to get a meter and start testing before each shot.

I did a few blood glucose curves at home (tested his sugar level every 2 hours for a 12 hour period) and found that the Caninsulin isn't as harsh for my cat as some people on here suggest. All cats are different so that's why testing is so important! Tony only dropped from 25 to 14.7 which is still high.. and that was after a 4 unit shot!! (he's now on 4 units in the am and 3 in the pm.).. he's a big guy though.

Tony was diagnosed in late may and his numbers have consistantly been between 15 and 25. Last week before a couple of shots he was between 7 and 9 so we reduced the amount of insulin we gave him.

So i'm quite new to this as well but am happy to find other caninsulin users as most people here are on lantus.

Like others say - giving the shot while they are eating seems to be the best... tony doesn't seem to notice much. He doesn't really care about the ear prick either haha... he's more upset that i have to squish him and hold him while i warm his ear with a sock full of rice (heated in the microwave for about 20 seconds)

Are there any other caninsulin-ers out there too? Maybe we can start posting more in the caninsulin/vetsulin forum and get some more traffic over there!!

Hi there,

Max was on caninsulin for about 6 weeks before recently being switched to lantus. We just weren't getting the duration out of the caninsulin so now giving lantus a go. Before the switch Max was on 3 units twice a day and was getting pre-shots between 25-28 and nadirs around 10-13. Max would get a really steep big drop from +1.5 to +3, then a slower small drop from +3 to +5, nadir about +5 and by +6 was already on the rise back up. He'd rise pretty steadily/evenly back up to the pre-shot value from the nadir. All in all he was only getting around 4 hours out of each 12 hour cycle where his BG was at a reasonable level.

Despite all of that, his condition improved massively over that time, especially the first 3-4 weeks after starting on the caninsulin (started at 1u and worked up to 3u). He put weight and muscle back on, his fur was a lot shinier and softer and he finally got his winter coat. He was back to charging around the backyard at full speed and climbing our big almond tree and seemed a lot happier. I was surprised how good he was looking despite the numbers not being that great.

As everyone says, every cat is different! The caninsulin just didn't last long enough for Max, but hope you it works better for moxycat. Having to switch and go back to the start was a pain. Max has gone a little bit backwards but am slowly upping the lantus and not far off a good dose now. Goodluck with getting moxycat under control

Amy
