Hi, I'm new to the board. My cat, Nermal, has had diabetes for a year now and I've been giving her insulin injections and monitoring with Glucotest strips in her litter box. The vet kept reassuring me that we could get her off of insulin in a few months but I've lost faith in her as I've read about how inaccurate the strips can be and started reading up on glucose testing. I bought a meter and test strips and have been testing on myself to get comfortable with the process. I've also been reading up on testing techniques and how to do a glucose curve. Thanks everyone for the advice in the site and the message board! I've learned a lot. :)

Hi Andrea and Nermal,
Good for you for deciding to look a little further for information. As you have likely already realized, diabetes is not hard to treat and is really best done at home.

A couple of questions: the answers will make it easier for us to help you and Nermal (love the name!)
What insulin are you using? What dose are you at now and how often do you dose?
What are you feeding Nermal? Do you feed small meals throughout the day?

The 3 parts to treating diabetes are insulin, diet, and home testing. If you need help with low carb wet food choices, we have an amazing list of foods (mostly available in US and Canada - forgot to see if you had posted your location). I don't have the link but someone will post it. And you are starting home testing - that is excellent. Again, if you need tips to make it all easier, just ask and we will offer lots of suggestions.

Thanks for you help, Just-As-Appy. Here are the answers to your questions. Any advice would be welcome:

Insulin - Lantus
Dose - .5 units in the morning and in the evening
Food - 1 can of Fancy Feast Classic in the morning and evening

I scheduled an appointment for Nermal with a new vet on Saturday. I'll be talking to the vet about glucose testing. Hope it goes well.

Hi and welcome! Good luck on the home testing. Don't let them try to con you into buying the AlphaTrak or other pet meter! What meter did you buy, anyway?

You can split those cans of FF up into more meals if you're finding he's going hungry between them. Half a can every 6 hrs or so might help support his pancreas.
