Hi
For the last 48 hours Nelson's BS has been below 200 before feeding. I have not given any Insulin. He was on Imes dry food for 10 years. All low carb wet/no treats for the last 4 weeks. Started on ProZinc 3 weeks ago at 3u . His BS was around 300 at the start. I was decreasing the dose as his numbers improved ,last dose 1.5u.
He is eating\peeing and acting normally.
Is it possible that with a recent diagnosis, like his ,that just changing his diet could allow him to normalize ?
We will be seeing the Vet on Monday . Would you give ANY Insulin if he stays below 200?
Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Yes, it is possible for wet low carb to push new diabetics into remission. You would be very lucky!

Our range for remission is 40-120 for 2 weeks without insulin. While we suggest not shooting under 200 for new diabetics, this presents a nerve wracking waiting game for you. If he were mine, I would monitor carefully. Any time he reaches 200, I would give a tiny dose to help his pancreas out. If you look at Skittles's spreadsheet in her thread (sherri b) she is in the exact place you are. Skittles is getting low numbers, but not all in that remission range. His pancreas drops the numbers on its own most of the time, but she has a target to shoot a tiny amount if he rises.

The danger of just proclaiming him in remission and not monitoring any more is that he could gradually move back up into diabetic ranges and you will lose the pancreas helping out.
