I posted in the health forum first. I hope it is ok to post here now, as I have questions about Lantus. Bootsie is 12 and has a history of FLUTD, and has been recently diagnosed with IBD. He was tested for pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, and heart disease. Those were negative thank goodness. His first bout with diabetes ended a month after stopping dry c/d and giving Lantus. It was a roller coaster ride. My vet started him at the appropriate dose for his weight but it was too much. He was in remission for 5 months. At the er vet with vomiting from IBD his bg was high again. After a change in food he was ok for a week. It is back again. After doing spot bg checks for 2 weeks that ranged from 200-277, my vet said we could start him on .50 units of Lantus twice a day. He weighs almost 20 lbs but is not fat. He is a big boy. He used to be fat on the c/d.

I hate to stick his ears and am trying to do it only when necessary although I did it quite a bit yesterday. ( I am on step 8 of adding the spreadsheet.) I checked his bg before his last shot and it was 174. I chickened out and did not give him his shot. I forgot about the shed. Until the shed is full (3-4 days?), should I always give his shot unless the numbers are very low? Would low be under 70?
Thanks for your help.

It really comes down to your comfort level with giving insulin with a lower than normal preshot number since you aren't exactly new to FD. Also how much you are going to be around on that day to watch Booties. My current diabetic Autumn is my 4th diabetic so with her my cut off is 100 anything below 100 I don't shoot but then again I am also home all day with her to keep an eye on her when I do shoot low. If I know that for some reason that I'm not going to be around to check on her often through out the day my cut off is 175.
