I have ordered from Mark's Marine and will have a few days to learn about Lantus. I've read all of the stickies and plan to go the start low/go slow protocol. Based on her PZI history of numbers, should I start her at 1.0 U or .5 U?
Since her diagnosis 5 months ago when I took her in as a rescue, we have taken care of dental issues, a skin infection from over-grooming, the over-grooming is under control now, and she has put 2 healthy pounds on what was an emaciated frame. She is 100% healthy other than the diabetes.
With the PZI I've not been able to get her regulated. There would be periods of consistency, but PS always ended up higher than I want. Nadir would usually be at +4. To decrease PS numbers, I would increase the dose by a smidge and that would be OK for a little while, but then we would have a serious drop into hypo territory at +4 for no apparent reason. Since I'm at work all day, I can't be around to check for those sudden lows. On May 6 she was at 94 at +7. Lord only knows where she was at her usual +4 nadir.
And then last night at the new reduced dose she went from 241 PS to only 234 at +5.
Seems like, at mid cycle, 1 unit becomes too much while .8 becomes too little, but PS numbers always remain too high regardless of which dose.
Anyhow... because of all of that, the new vet suggested Lantus and I'm willing to try anything to see if Boo can reach consistency and stay in a good range of numbers. I will do cart wheels if I can get her to stay in the blues from PS to PS. I look forward to the good advise I know is forthcoming.
