Is anyone familiar with a new brand of cat food that is suppose to be high in protein and low in calories. It is made by a company in Texas called," Merrick". They have some interesting sounding flavors. Wondering if tis would be something suitable for diabetic cats?

Yes, we use some of the Merrick food, especially Cowboy Cookout, Grammy's Pot Pie and Thanksgiving Day Dinner. The last 2 I tend to use to cushion drops...they are higher carb than I typically feed. I would just buy a can or two to try out at first....it has a different texture than other foods, some cats don't care for it.

There is also "BG" or Before Grain by Merrick. There are some posts on both kinds a little further down. Been trying some Merrick myself lately, to give my girl a change of pace. So far, so good.

I'd be really interested in this, as well. Not that the cats care, but Evo and Wellness day in and out is what's the menu here (with the occasional Trader Joe's Tuna thrown in). So...if anyone has some information about Merrick, I'd love to read about it.

Thanks!

Best-
Michele

My understanding is that Merrick's Cowboy Cookout flavor has a similar calorie breakdown to that of a mouse. Other than that I don't know a whole lot about it.

I use Merrick Cowboy Cookout and Surf and Turf with all my diabetics in addition to Wellness and Friskies.
Check Binky's list because they have several flavors that are not low carb.

I like the balance of protein and fat, as well as the difference in texture. Try to keep my guys diet as varied as possible.

I use Merrick Grammy's Pot Pie for Megan's normal food. I'm not sure why it is thought to be higher carb. I've gotten information directly from the manufacturer (who is very responsive to specific questions, by the way), and the carb content is not high. It's not super-low, such as 0-2%, but Janet & Binky's chart says it is 8%. The most recent information I got didn't have the carb values, of course, but the other values didn't look significantly different from what is in the charts, so I imagine the carb value is still about 8%. It's lower fat than Wellness, which seems to matter to Megan. (Both Cowboy Cookout and Grammy's Pot Pie are 42% fat, according to the charts.)

Turducken is 9% carb. I sometimes use it when I can't get Grammy's Pot Pie. Its higher fat but still not as high as Wellness.

I used to use Cowboy Cookout, which is a beef food, until it became evident that my asthma cat is highly allergic to it. Even licking the bowl after Megan was finished (when there would be no visible food left) was enough to provoke a coughing fit. Its makeup is indeed ideal, but Grammy's seems to suit Megan fine, and it's not dangerous for Darwin.

The values in Janet & Binky's charts are from 2007, so Merrick isn't a new food. Must just be new to your area.

The new food by Merrick, which is different than the food that you (and I) feed is sold as "BG" aka "Before Grain." I have been trying to get an answer from Merrick on it's fat/protein/carb breakdown but haven't yet gotten a response. I bought a few cans for the heck of it and my cat loves the turkey. On it's label, it claims to be "96% turkey" or whatever meat. Still, I would like to know official breakdowns of each flavor. If anyone is lucky enough to get this info, please post it for us.

If you find some flavors your cats like, PetFoodDirect often has good prices on Merrick and there's usually an online coupon code floating around. My vet recommended it when my cat was first diagnosed but it was hard to find locally.
