MOXYCAT!

New Member
My cat Moxy was dianosed with diabetes today. I am going to start giving injections and doing my own hometesting but know very little about all of it. I was on another forum earlier and was advised to post on this one. Im from Canada and my vet prescribed...Caninsulin. Was givin some info on this particular insulin and does not sound very good. Does anybody else here use this? If not what are some of the more common ones used? Any help at all would be much appreciated.....just wanna start seeing her get better! Cory n MOXYCAT!

Hi Cory, and, of course, you too, sweet MOXYCAT,

This wondrous Board is global. You will find there are many wondrous sugar-cat parents in Canada.

Caninsulin can be tricky. We call it Vetsulin in the US. It has a definite drop or kind of a V curve. It'll be okay if you home test.

Cats, for some reason known only to cats, tend to metabolize insulin about twice as fast as humans. Who knew any creature that basically requires 16 hours of napping time per day could possibly metabolize anything twice as fast as humans? Go figure...

Lantus and Levemir are gentler and more cat-friendly insulins. You might want to speak with MOXY's vet about either.

I can't help but love a sugar cat whose name must be shouted. She sounds like a handful! I was trained by a handful... We danced for four years and then she sent me another handful...

Welcome to the place you never wanted to be; but, will be blessed for having found.

Love and encouraging hugs for you both,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart and who taught me to be brave...

PS: Other things we will undoubtedly be asking you: MOXY's age, what she eats, any other medical issues, whatever else you think we should know...

PPS: Breathe, dear Cory, breathe. Feline diabetes is overwhelming at first; but, is completely do-able. Just breathe.

Cedric was on Lantus for about a month. I hometested (still do) and completely changed his diet. The loving gang here finally got me to stopped feeding Cedric dry food (he was eating canned as well) and within a day his numbers dropped; two days he was giving me normal numbers.

I totally hear you that it is overwhelming. Cedric was diagnosed a week after we moving into our new house (I'm a 1st time home buyer), so I was whammied! You'll find a lot of support on these forums - there is a great group of people who have been where you are and are ready with advice and help.

Welcome!

HELP!

Hi everyone,

Moxy was prescribed Caninsulin (which i havnt heard anything good about, so i have discarded it!). Checked with 2 pharmacies here and they both sell Lantus...but for humans....does this work?? Because it comes in 100 units per mm if i was to buy u100 syringes would it be ok to give her 1 unit ?? Cory n MOXYCAT!

Human Lantus is what we use. :-D You will need human U100 syringes and yes, 1u twice a day is a good starting dose, you can also use a human glucometer to test her at home. Which you will want to do to make sure she is high enough to give insulin to. Lantus has a very high remission rate in newly diagnoised kitties, and we have an excellent support group here for Lantus users.

Lantus is a popular insulin here and seems to work very well. Yes, it is a human insulin but has been well studied and there is a specific protocol for cats.

Here is the Lantus forum. viewforum.php?f=9

Be sure to read the starred topics at the top. They will tell you the cheapest way to buy it, how to store it and how to dose it.

Remember, 1 unit is a very tiny amount.

Get 3/10cc capacity, 30ga or 31ga, "short" needles for U-100 insulin.

The first little mark, next to the needle is 'zero', then 1-unit, 2,3,4, 5 (first numbered mark).

You only draw to that first little mark past the zero.

Does your vet know you want to switch to Lantus. In the US, a prescription is required to
purchase Lantus.

Hi Cory,
I am formerly from Winnipeg, Manitoba and have 2 diabetic cats. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have; we've all been where you are now.
