After consulting with my vet, the biggest obstacle to trying to handle my kitties diabetes is that due to my work schedule I will not be able to stick to the 12 hour intervals for the insulin shots, I work three different shifts every week , I would be able to give the insulin on time four days a week but three times a week it would be 16.5 hours apart. My other big concern is that I'm away from home five days a week from 9 to 10.5 hours a day and don't know how I could observe him. It sounds like this is an extremely important part of his care. The vet says the issue with the intervals isn't ideal but we could try it, any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, I don't have any neighbors or family that can assist so that isn't an option, I have until Friday to decide what to do and my heat is breaking.

Welcome, you definitely have a very busy work schedule / life! Do you have any day off? Sounds like you work 7 days a week. Has your Vet given you the option to try a diet change first? Go ahead and start a new thread on the Main Health Forum so more eyes can see your dilemma.

Thank you for responding, I have two days off, usually Tuesday and Friday, but I'm in retail and we don't have set scheduled and I have an approx 60 min commute each way which make my working days long. The vet indicated Reggie would need insulin as well as a diet change, he is almost 14, we are waiting on his thyroid results, should be in by Wednesday, which is why I have until Friday to figure out what to do.Welcome, you definitely have a very busy work schedule / life! You could work on the diet change now before he starts insulin. I understand the hectic retail schedules. I've worked quite a few over the years. There are other kitties here that have additional health issues with diabetes.

There are other kitties here that have additional health issues with diabetes.Thank you again, yes I have started on trying to get him on wet food, he has never liked it and is stubborn, but I'm giving him it first, he will lick it and nibble a few bites and he is done, I'm off tomorrow and plan on going to purchase whatever approved foods that are recommended. I started a new thread on the health forum as you suggested.You could work on the diet change now before he starts insulin.

For wet food most here feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. Perdcription foods are expensive and not necessary.
If you are unsuccessful in getting him of dry there are a few dry diabetic choices. My favorite is Young Again Zero carb (1% carb) available at Youngagainpetfood.com (they will send you a free sample if you ask). The other is Evo Cat and Kitten in the purple bag (8% carb) which is in some pet stores or Amazon and jet.com.
