New to this! Question about possible furshot..

Hello!

So I'm now on day three of insulin for my boy (lantus). Last night I was teaching my mom how to give insulin if ever needed and she thinks it was a possible furshot. I didn't really feel anything wet after she did it but he's also only on .5 right now and it's such a tiny amount! His PMPS was 496. I decided to test him at +3 and it was at 548! Does that mean it was a furshot? He did eat at around +2 so not sure if that makes a difference..

Also, I know it's only the beginning but seeing him in the 500's freak me out! he was on a food diet change for a whole month before starting insulin and during that time I constantly tested him.. and he would always roam in the 400s. Seeing 500's when he's on insulin kind of freaks me out.

Here is his spreadsheet for a closer look. he's due for his AM shot in about two hours. Currently, he's sitting by he's little scratcher, rolling around looking happy and comfortable! I'm very curious what his AMPS will be.....

I would wait for someone with more experience to weigh in, but with Lantus you can definitely smell a fur shot - it has a very distinctive smell, next time you are drawing some squirt it onto your finger and you will know what it smells like (I did one just the other day and knew by the smell of Lantus in her fur).

Maybe do the same for your mother so she also knows what to look out for.

Of course the rule of thumb is definite or possible fur shot, "do not re-shoot, as you don't know how much went in", just ride it out, record your test results and shoot again at 'normal time'.

The depot is still building so the higher numbers are not uncommon. Ride this one out. As Patricia said above next cycle just take a small smell and you dont even need to squirt any out just sniff the needle after you draw dose. It's very distinct and very strong. After shot give a little rub where you shot and 'snuggle close put your nose down where you shot and smell. If it's a fur shot you will smell it promise :)

This is a process a marathon not a sprint. Just relax it can take a little bit to get to better numbers. Even then when the better numbers come it will cause some bouncing to higher numbers. As their bodies arent used to lower more normal bf's

Here’s a link to your first post from main.

Welcome to LLB. I am sorry to start this with a request but it’s necessary for us to be able to help you. Please start one of our spreadsheets. Excel won’t work for us all.

The stickies at the top of this forum have so much information so start reading a little at a time and continue asking questions. I am attaching a link on how to post on this forum. It’s different from main and because we are scanning to see if anyone needs help so it’s important to follow the format.

Don't worry about the 500 numbers. Milo is probably just bouncing from the insulin injection. Last week, my cat went from the 500's down to a BG of 50 the next morning. I know it is scary but this is not unusual. Milo is lucky to have such caring parents. Take care and try not to worry. It took me over a year to feel confident and relax. It is a learning process but it will get a lot easier when you get used to it.

Thank you so much! Thankfully I did it right this morning and I tested him at +5 to make sure it wasn’t another fur shot. Hoping this gets easier!!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! I really needed it.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for your response I really appreciate it!

It does get easier, sometimes still stressful, but in general easier. Every time I get stressed about it I remember my vet's very gloomy prognosis for Whiskey (she was a rescue and in a horrific state when she was diagnosed, they also thought she had FIP). Thanks to the help of this forum she's a healthy and happy girl now.

I can't see your spreadsheet either again @ssaraiex26

When posting on the Lantus board
I see this is your first on the lantus board
I would post every day like this
Date Milo AMPS# and any tests after that, since you are using the Libre you don't have to post every test if you don't want to. Then continue with the PMPS # and any tests after that so we can follow along
To add additional tests to your title tap on Thread Tools it will be to the right, tap on that then tap in Edit Thread add your tests and tap Save
You should also link your previous days post to the new one
Your previous days post is all the way up top above the pic of that kitty on the left hand side , it's in that long line. Copy it and paste it to your new post.
