My cat Brino (10 years-old, blue fur with a patch of white on his chest, tall and my "gentle giant") was recently diagnosed with diabetes. My vet wants him on Lantus and after reading that some cats have eventually been able to regulate and go off of it, I want him on it as well. I signed up for Lantus' Solostar Pen Discount Card, but it hasn't been much help. It says pay no more than $25 for a prescription, but it really just offers $100 off and most pharmacies run more than $300 per prescription. I feel a little overwhelmed as I try to price shop for it. Any advice on how to get it for a lot less? Plus, the vet put him on Purina DM. Is that the best choice for cat food?

Thank you!
Katie

Welcome to FDMB, Katie.

Try going to Target, Costco, or SAM's to see if you can get them to sell 1 pen at a time.

Thanks! I tried calling various pharmacies and they said they weren't allowed to open the pack to split them up, so I'm going to get it from Walmart because they already have the prescription and there's not much difference in the price at each place I get quotes from. If Brino *fingers crossed* doesn't have to go on it permanently, I'll put the rest of the pens on craigslist.

I get my pens from Walmart and they sell them to me at $25 per pen. I get my prescription written for one pen at a time so they can only sell me one pen at a time (and not a box). The discount is per prescription, so if your prescription is for 5 pens, that's probably why they're offering $100 off instead of $25 per pen. YMMV.

Contrary to what the label says, Lantus will last you six months if you keep it in the fridge.

What kind of DM is it? wet or dry? We recommend wet because its lower carb and can help cats into remission - but many of us here feed the cheaper and just as good for diabetic cats Fancy feast classic pates, Friskies pates or wellness grain free canned. Best to do a diet change before starting insulin though as the blood sugar can start to drop right after a change in food.

We also recommend home testing so you can see whats going on without going to the vet all the time for expensive curves. Its also safer as you don't want to inject the cat without knowing what their blood sugar is doing.

Hey Wendy&Tiggy! Are you saying that the lantus pens will last six months, or does this also apply to the bottle? My little man, Chibi just got his first bottle of insulin today an the label says it expires in 28 days.. which is really odd to me that it costs almost $200 and only lasts 28 days.

Also, for the pen... does your doctor have to actually prescribe that? OR, since I have a Lantus prescription, can I ask for the pen? AH.... so much to learn!

Yes.
Keep it on a stationary shelf in the refrigerator. It'll be fine for up to 6 months.
You may notice towards the end of the bottle you have to increase the dose a bit due to waning effectiveness. If so, be sure to slightly reduce it when you start a new container.

Both pens and vials last up to six months. Good thing about the pens is you only "open" one at a time so the others in the pack will last even longer. There is a very long expiry - like a year or more - on the pens.

I live in Canada so I buy the lantus off the shelf without a prescription but in the US I think you need to get the vet to prescribe it. And make "pen" on the prescription.

Wrap that vial in some kind of padding like a sock or something. They break easy when you drop em.

I want to sign up for the lantus discount card. Do I put it in my cats name since the insulin prescription in done that way?
Thanks!

So I put the card with my cats first name my last name and the cats age being 18 years old. Do I have that right?
