New to the forum, not to feline diabetes. My kitty has been on pzi for years and eats ff and raw. Is there somewhere that I can search through the forum messages? Glad to have found this place!

Great insulin and food.

There is a search box at the top right hand corner if you have something specific to find- but you get every post with the words mentioned so it can be very broad.

Or you could ask your questions and have a more direct approach by getting referred to topics by people that have them bookmarked already.
 
Thank you for the replies. Ok, I have searched a bit. Wow, yes there is a lot of info here. My kitty was dehydrated and not acting himself, the vet gave me fluids to give every other day for a bit. He looks much better. I have sodium chloride and would like to find info on the different types of fluids since I need to get more.

You will need an Rx to get more fluids; its a vet thing.

And welcome to the board!

Adding a tablespoon of water to the mix for meals may help.

Home testing will let you determine if you have optimal control of the diabetes. If you don't, excessive urination may continue and he could be at risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). See my signature linke Secondary Monitoring Tools for info on how to test for ketones, plus some other tips.
 
Thank you. I always test before shots and he is eating the food with added water. I have an rx for normosol, but he has been getting sodium chloride (from the vet visit), some with b vitamins. Lactated ringers is another option, is one preferable?

That may be more of a vet question. Whatis the reason he is getting fluids? Renal disease, vomiting, diarrhea, other?

Or you can do some reading of the Merck Veterinary Manual section on fluid therapy online.
 
He is getting fluids because he was dehydrated. The vet said the lab work looked ok, his bg was high and that matched the home meter test. He is feeling much better, his bg's still a bit crazy.

I understand he is dehydrated, but WHY is he dehydrated? That determines what kind of fluids may be best to give.
 
That IS the question I am asking, why? I am not sure...just keep wondering what it could be. We got lab work done at the vet visit this week. What do I look for?

Possible reasons for dehydration in an uninjured animal include:
- uncontrolled diabetes results in glucose elimination via the urinary tract and it takes water with it; the cat may be very thirsty and unable to keep up with the demand (another reason to use canned or raw food!)
- renal disease - the kidneys don't work well, so more water is needed to accomplish urea removal
- hypethyroidism - the metabolism is on high, and runs a lot of fluid through the kidneys
- uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea can cause massive fluid loss
 
Got new pzi yesterday so maybe a couple days of fresh insulin will help him feel better also. I sent you a pm.
