New to the board

Hi there, this is my second cat with diabetes. My first one was female and was much easier to administer her the insulin. This guy, does not appreciate it at all. He was just diagnosed last week and we have been back to the vet in less than a week due to the fact that he started to hide under my son's bed. He never does that so I knew something was wrong. We had been administering his insulin at the scruff and apparently it wasn't absorbing fast enough. His BS was down 100 points from last Friday though. Now we are administering it in his flank. Did I mention he has his claws???? However, tonight went much better.

I am on the road during the week so my husband has to inject. This morning the neighbor assisted and it was far to stressful for everyone so they did administered in the scruff. What are everyone's thoughts on these two areas?

Opinions differ with some saying that absorption in the scruff is not the best. Other people find no difference. It might vary with the cat. If you''re having difficulty getting the injection done use whatever area is easiest.

Thanks for the info. He is a very difficult cat and when I am home I can get it done through his flank. However, I travel for work during the week and it is less stressful for ALL of us if he uses the scruff. I keep reading no dry food. My vet gave us the same dry as she did wet. It is prescription. We don't give him very much dry food. I am trying to ween him off of it. So, tell me how do you work with your wet food? Do you just feed morning and night? I was going to let the wet food that I feed him in the morning 1/2 can out until he finished it. He doesn't always finish it in one meal. Your thoughts?

We do promote feeding low carb wet food here. Grocery store brands like Friskies and Fancy Feast pates (no sauce/gravy types) are fine and much easier on the budget. Vets often advise two meals a day in association with insulin shot. Most of us here don't do that - we feed multiple meals and many people find the automatic pet feeders to be a godsend. They put food out of the can in the early time slots, perhaps an ice cube on top of the later meal and then freeze chucks of wet food for the latest meal to keep it fresh. I suggest you repost on the main health forum asking any/a;; questions you have about injecting, feeding, etc. More people will see your post there.
