Hello! My name is Melissa and our kittie Herzog, who is almost 18, was diagnosed diabetic 3 weeks ago after I thought he had a UTI because he was peeing outside the box. At diagnosis his Sugar was 489. I immediately switched him from his dry food diet (Merrick salmon grain free) and put him on Wild Calling wet food. Through the help of the FB group I got tips on getting him started on insulin despite my husbands absolute reluctance to "torture" him with needles everyday *big eye roll*. He wanted him put to sleep but I can't go that route unless I have exhausted my options and given him a fighting chance...
The diet change SEEMED to help at first but I wasnt testing his sugar yet because my meter had not arrived in the mail. Once I got it I started testing him right away and got a lot of high readings in the 3 and 400s over several days. One morning he was really listless, looked awful, hadnt been grooming himself (he's all white and his paws/belly and tail were looking yellowed) and while he was drinking periodically he was not eating. That day I offered him whatever he would take (very tiny bit of his old dry food, baked chicken, chicken broth from noodle soup ect). I ended up syringing him the broth and he ate a bit of baked chicken. The next day we headed over to the vet and got him fluids for dehydration and some syringes and then to walmart to get Novolin N.
Got home and did a quick test and the meter shows 88, which it had NEVER been that low. So I did it again, this time the meter said LO. Then again and it was 388, then again it was 379. I didnt dose him with insulin because I wasnt sure if I just didnt get enough blood the first 2 times or the strips were bad or what... Later that evening I tested him several times and it was mid 300s. I dosed him with .5 (maybe more like .4) unit of Novolin. 50 minutes later I tested him and he was at 187... But, he wasnt eating and hadnt eaten and wouldnt eat...
This morning he was 359 at 9am and I dosed him again at .4 unit. I havent tested again since but he still hasnt eaten and is just drinking water from the faucet every so often.
Sorry for my massive thread. NOT even sure if this is the way an introduction is supposed to go LOL but my weeks have basically been totally consumed by this and I wanted to get it all down in 1 spot right away.
Ive been told I need to learn to make a spreadsheet soI would love direction on that and of course any other tips. Im going to get sardines and tuna today to hopefully get him eating. Im cooking him eggs now.
