New to feline diabetes

My 14 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes last night. Luckily, her glucose level was not extremely high- so she is acting fine. Right now my main concern is balancing how to administer her insulin with her food. I’m worried she will not eat because of the shot and then things will become worse. I am lucky I work from home- however I do travel. Is there any advice on how to manage this. I want her to have the best support possible. She is not use to other people. It’s always been just me and my husband and she is really attached to me. So I’m concerned about possibly hiring help if needed in the future.

What is the name of the insulin the vet prescribed? If it's either ProZinc or Lantus, your cat doesn't necessarily need to eat right at shot time as long as you know your cat will eventually eat something within an hour or so. Most cats associate being poked with food.

And always test the blood glucose level before giving insulin to avoid a potential hypo later. Did your vet discuss testing with you? Some vets don't but it's a critical part of managing the diabetes, just like it is for Human diabetics. A Human blood glucose meter is all you need. Many vets are just sticking a CGM on a cat without telling the overwhelmed owner about testing with a handheld meter or associated costs.

People here do travel. Many rely on a pet sitter. Others take their cat with them if they have that option. Others board their cat with the vet or at a boarding place.
