Hi, everyone. Would really appreciate testing help; would also really like to connect with similar people as i am new to area and COVID has limited my ability to get around; would love communications. Luke is 10 years old; he was misdiagnosed with diabetes at almost 3; remission 2 years ago; now, doctor says, real diabetes; help with food also;

I answered your food question in your other thread. Then I read your profile.
First you need to know you're in the right place, most people end up here or in the Facebook group. I prefer here.
There are many of us in your age group so don't let that throw you off. There are many more who share disabilities or are retired, this place is all run by volunteers who share what they've learnt over as much as the last twenty years. No question is too stupid, we've all laughed and cried together.
What kind of help do you need? Something specific or everything?
You've come to the right place for some human communication. There is a whole world of us that all started the same way, staring at a syringe wondering how this happened to us. I cried for a day and then got on with it. Diabetes is not a death sentence, it's just an inconvenience.
For today start with this and know you're not alone.

My name is Dickson, we've had two diabetic cats that are no longer with us but left us a lifetime of knowledge and love. Feeling better? :bighug:

You asked about testing so we'll start there. Did your vet show you anything?
If you're using a Windows computer you can right click on any image here, then click Save Picture and it's yours. There are no copyright issues. Also in Windows you can enlarge the screen, while pressing Ctrl press + to enlarge the screen, then back to normal by pressing Ctrl and -
Getting the blood sample requires a lancet. Some people use a lancet device which can be preset, I did it freehand. Worry about the blood later, get the sample on to the test strip and in to the meter as quickly as possible. If you know all this already let us know.
The lancets I used and where in the ear to poke. As with syringes, the higher the number (gauge) the thinner the lancet or syringe.

Dear Dickson, Please forgive for the late reply. I was actually terrified to get on this site alone until tonight; So thankyou so much for answering me and taking an interest in my situation. I still do not know how to navigate this site. Saw the monumental printout of cat foods and their contents. But i cannot find where it tells you what percentages to look for; I was interested in the Wellness morsels, pates, etc. I also cannot find if anyone replied to my call for help with testing; I really do not believe Luke is a candidate, but am willing to try.

Am so sorry for your loss; that kind of grief nothing can heal except another cat or dog. elizabeth, Luke's mom.

I hate to sound so desperate, but i really need to connect with people near me not only for testing, but in the event that something were to happen to me. I do not have a very cooperative family and have been transplanted from Lancaster Pa to Cherry Hill, NJ and have not been able to connect with anything because of COVID and other more serious reasons. I lost my connection to Stingo and Luke in Lititz, Pa. Her family - one passed away and the other needs much work. And her mother also has 3 o4 4 cats; so Stingo and Luke were to go to her, will and all and now the spot is empty. I am 73 and basically have been left to my own devices by my own family, if you can believe it. Other things are going on also. I desperately need to know how to navigate this system.

Hi and welcome.
For the % of carbs in food, look for 10% or under. Canned food.
If you are feeding dry food at the Moment I would not swap over until you are testing the blood glucose as a lower carb diet drops the blood glucose. I am going to tag @Bandit's Mom to help you with a spreadsheet so you can enter the data into it once you are home testing.
I don’t live in the US so can’t help with showing you how to home test.
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets to prick the ears.
Here is a link which may help. It has links within it so click on those too.
Keep asking questions. We are SO glad you found us.

Dear Lukes mom (eventually we'll have to call you something more personal, no last names are needed). Take a deep breath and we'll start from the beginning. What looks and sounds easy for many of us was terrifying at one time. I've never forgotten our first week hovering over Nigel wondering if we had just killed our cat, he was having a nap. I also had a wonderful vet that wouldn't let me leave the clinic until I got everything right, then she phoned us twice a day for 14 straight days adjusting his dose. That was lucky for us and now you need the same. I know this is all a lot to take on but thousands of us have all started from nothing and we haven't forgotten what that was like. One thing at a time.
If any of this sounds condescending just ignore it. I have a brain injury, some evil OCD, ADHD and a bit of dyslexia so I'm strictly a visual learner. I can only do this sitting in front of a big monitor using a mouse. You mentioned navigating the site. The forum you're in now is the right one for the basic questions. You'll get a lot more info that will always be relevant in what we call the Stickys, they're clearly marked and appear at the top of most forums. What I had to do was print out everything, turn off the world and curl up on the sofa with a hi-liter and hundreds of sheets of paper. Later you'll figure out what's most important. Some of these things were plastered all over our fridge. God bless fridge magnets.
In 'Health Links / FAQs about Feline Diabetes' you'll find everything you need to know about a Hypo episode. This is a 911 thing that cannot be ignored. Keep that next to maps, phone numbers and the hours of your vet, an alternate vet and the nearest emergency clinic.
I used Caninsulin insulin, called Vetsulin in other parts of the world. In 'Caninsulin / Vetsulin and N / NPH' you'll find Stickys about when to feed before testing, syringes to use and a lot more. What we're doing is running our own little veterinary clinic at home so you need to self educate. I use Windows so instead of printing entire pages I would copy and paste (again, I can't function without a mouse) what I needed into Notepad, then into a Word document. Notepad loads quicker but doesn't spell check and uses tiny font. That way you can edit out the stuff you already know.
The Board. Some new members are under the impression there's someone here 24/7 running the show. This is all done by volunteers so a 3:00AM emergency post may not get an immediate reply. We do have members from all over the planet in different time zones. Basically the board is trusting us not to burn down the house while they're not here. Don't name vets or people you hate, be patient, understanding and kind. Help will come.
Your emotions. Most of us have lost it at some point, we're all human. I've shredded Noah's ears and had Nigel run into the basement with a syringe hanging off his butt. Don't be afraid to cry or share your fears and phobias, that's what friends are for and I've made many new friends here over the years. Internet "friends" was a strange concept to me at one time, I got over it.
Stupid questions. That doesn't happen here. If anyone is truly nasty to you report it to the board and never ever be afraid to say the wrong word or ask the simplest question. Yes our cats have arms, I call them the wrong names when I'm tired and often forget where the thing-a-majig is.
The right way. There is no right way to poke holes in a cat, it's whatever works for you. Nigel would leap on the table where I spread out a beach towel to test him, the ideal patient. Noah was nervous so I had to sing the Mockingbird song to him. N2C No two cats are ever the same.
That's it for now.

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to the board. I’m sorry to hear Luke is diabetic, but hopefully we can help you.

@JanetNJ do you know anyone in the Cherry Hill, NJ area who might be able to help out?

in the event that something were to happen to me...I am 73....have been left to my own devices by my own family....I desperately need to know how to navigate this system.
Don't worry about your age. There's a lot of us that are retired and/or disabled. Forget about trying to sound 'hip', it doesn't matter.
It's not just you, I come from a family of cat hating over educated snobs.
Navigating the system is no harder than a thin textbook. Just look through the different forums and see what's being asked and answered.
If something were to happen to you??? My mother in law lives with us, she's got 22 years on you and says goodnight to all five cats. That's the least of your problems.

Maybe
@Susan & Claudio

Is this your first time in interactive social media? Whatever bad experiences you may have had before won't be repeated here, it's all about the cats.
Some people can do all this on a smart phone, mine is in a drawer somewhere collecting dust.

Hi fellow nj person. I'm in North nj so quite a ways away.... But I wanted to reply. I have a link to a video in my signature showing how I tested my cat CC at home. I know it's scary and daunting at first, but I assure you out will all be routine soon!

Make sure you got the jersey shore.... We have great beaches. :)
