My 8 year old kitty Joey was just diagnosed with Diabetes. He is at the animal clinic now and I am going in this week to learn how to give him injectins. I am petrified. Wish me luck.

Welcome Mary Lou and Joey! Take a deep breath! You're not alone! Everyone here has been where you are. We can help! You will find this is a wonderful, knowledgeable and very caring community. Ask all the questions you need as you go along.

If you would like to give us some details on what you'll be feeding and what type of insulin you'll be using, etc. we can help you get Joey on the right track. Where are you located?

I'm also curious as to why Joey is at the clinic? Are there other health issues?

I would advise also to learn how to do the home testing as it can save your cats life!

What food are you feeding? What insulin will you be given?

Once we know what you are doing now we can give more specific advice.

Well Joey came home the day before Thanksgiving and all my worrying was for nothing. I am giving him his injections and he does not even flinch. My Vet shaved off a spot on his back and it does make it easier to give the injection. He did get some smiles from his two brothers, but they were so glad to see him, it did not matter. He stayed at the clinic, I guess so they could regulate the insulin and also he had a bladder infection, for which I give him an antibotic. He has also made the switch from dry food to canned remarkable well. He was a feral cat when I took him in 8 years ago. I was feeding his Mother when she delivered 4 kittens under my front evergreen. We found homes for all of them, and we kept Joey. My late husband who had Alzheimers tamed him and so you know he holds a special place in my heart. So far it is looking good and to every one is as scared as I was, just do it. I am 78 years old and if I can do it you can too. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the replies. Mary Lou

Hopefully Joey will take well to the new routine. I know when I started it seemed impossible, but cats are pretty resiliant creatures. Are you planning to do hometesting? It truly is the best way to keep Joey safe. I was listening to the vet's advice and shooting blind - almost lost my dear, sweet Buster in a hypoglycemic episode. It is possible and it can kill. Please find a way to hometest! We can definitely help you through it. Big hugs to Joey now that he's home :YMHUG:

I am happy to report that Joey is now in remission, after 4 months and we are celebrating. The last three urine tests I did said negative. I thought I must be reading them wrong or there was something wrong with the strips, so I took him to the Vet this morning and received the good news. I fed both my cats only on Fancy Feast Classic canned food. Joey
was given 2 ml of Humulin N insulin twice a day. I do think getting him off the dry food and onto Fancy Feast played a big part, but I am not sure of that. Someone up there was looking out for Mary Lou and Joey and I can not be happier. Good luck to all of you. :-D

Thats fantastic! Just stay on top of him to keep him there

1. never slip and feed dry food or a high carb canned
2. Weigh him monthly to watch for weight changes
3. Keep an eye on the litter box for pee patch changes
4. Measure him bimonthly
5. Never give steroids
6. Keep an eye on his teeth etc for infection and treat promptly!

Thank you Wendy, for reminding me to keep a watch on Joey. My Vet told me the same. I will continue to check the urine and weigh him. I remember he had lost about 5 pounds when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. At the time I was so buxy taking care of my 12 year old cat who eventally died of cancer, that I slipped up and did not catch the diabetis right away with Joey. I will never go back to dry food for either of my two cats. Hope all goes well with you too.
