Hi everyone,

First of all, thank you in advance for your help. This is all very new and confusing to me so I really appreciate this forum.

Backstory - I adopted Luna 2 years ago when she was about 6 years old and very overweight. In the two years I have had her, I’ve put her on diet food to get her weight down and she’s gone from 15 lbs at adoption to now 8.5 lbs. When I first adopted her I struggled to find wet food that did not upset her stomach - I went through 4 different brands (Sheba, Royal Canin, Trader Joe’s, Wellness) before Hills Science Diet Sensitive stomach & skin chicken and vegetable finally cooperated with her. So I'm really nervous about trying new foods with her. Chicken seems to be the thing that doesn’t irritate her stomach.

Diagnosis- It’s only been a few days she was diagnosed. It came as a complete shock as she didn’t have many symptoms, she drank a lot of water but I just thought that was normal (this is my first pet). She’s never urinated or pooped outside the litter box and is pretty playful and overall happy. We were only able to catch this through bloodwork which my new vet recommended (my old vet when I first adopted did not even mention this and I was so new to pet care, I didn’t know to even ask). So I have no idea how long she’s had it.

Vet instructions: Vet has told me I can feed her a can of my hills wet food (3 oz each can) in the morning and at night and give her 2 units of Lantus with each of those meals. I have not gotten the insulin yet because I’m confused as to why they’ve prescribed 15 Lantus pens. I’m not ready to shell out $470 if I don’t need that many.

Questions:
Isn’t 15 pens a lot? I’m not sure if my math is correct but that wouldn’t last me several years? I’m hesitant to purchase so many since I’m not sure how this brand will suit her and if she’ll have diabetes for that long
I was looking to use GoodRx for the Lantus but wanted to know if there were any other recommendations. I’m in the US fyi
Unfortunately I didn’t purchase insurance before this happened. Should I still look into it?
Has anyone else experienced a cat with such a sensitive stomach? I read hills has a lot of carbs but I’m not sure what to give her that she won’t throw up
Anything else you can suggest or recommend that would be helpful is much appreciated.

Thanks so much!!

 You don't need 15. Though I do think they are sold in packs of 5. Also if you are interested in saving money, there is biosimilar insulin called Semiglee that costs less. Here is a coupon for it. Several people here use it and it works the same. Though I don't know if you need a different prescription for it. (I live in Canada so we do things a bit differently) But hopefully someone else can advise you on that.

Also some helpful information about using Lantus can be found here

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I am sure the vet didn’t prescribe 15 insulin pens. There is a misunderstanding there somewhere. I would ring and ask the vet to confirm.
Chris has given you the information for Semglee insulin which is the same as Lantus, just a generic brand but much cheaper.
I think 2 units twice a day is too high a dose to start on. If you are feeding a wet low carb diet, I would start at 1/2 unit insulin twice a day.
You will need to correct insulin syringes….U100 3/10 31 gauge, 6 or 8 mm 1/2 unit syringes as the pens only measure in 1 unit increments and not smaller increments.
I would also look into hometesting the blood glucose levels to keep your kitty safe

You can definitely feed more than twice a day! Tons of members feed 4 mini-meals a day.

Thank you so much for confirming! I was able to talk to the vet and they’re going to talk to the pharmacy about it. I also asked the vet about using Semeglee so I’m going to try that out, thank you again!
