This will be my third day getting a meter reading from my cat and each time i try i have to poke her ear like 5 times to get blood..
I have tried warming it up ... Rubbing it .. Squeezing it (which she doesn't like) and now every time i go to her ear she runs because im poking her to much... Its to hard to get any blood on her ear..
Is there anywhere else i can poke her besides her ear??

I feel so bad

What gauge lancet are you using? Starting out you will want to use a 26 or 28 gauge lancet. The smaller ones aren't very effective. Keep trying - you can do this!

I am using a 30g and i know i poke right through but doesnt seem to work.. Its frustrating because i know im hurting her by forcing her still .. plus it doesnt help on the stress for her

Hi,
we are very new here and still trying to get up to speed on testing. BUT here's a picture that someone sent to us... it helped us so i'm sending it along, hoping it helps you also.

the arrows show the way the blood flows in the ear and where to apply pressure to make the little blood dam. We aren't really squeezing his ear, just a little pressure for a couple seconds...seems to help... a lot

also, Ollie and i sit on a chair, for almost a minute while i hold his ear warming sock and scratch his neck and talk to him... getting that little ear nice and toasty makes more blood flow.

One more thing that works for us.. we test lower on Ollies ear.. just a smidge above where the bottom of the blue thumb is in this picture.

hang in there, ..,= i'm sure you'll be wonderful at it very soon. If you're experience is anything like ours, just when you're ready to scream, there'll be that little bead of blood.
take good care

I would encourage you to try a 26 or 28 gauge lancet. The 30g will be too fine, which is why you're just going through the ear without yielding any blood. You can get them at any pharmacy - I found some at a Walgreens that come in a variety of colors to make it just that much more fun!

If you can, try not poking all the way through the ear and just getting a hole in the top of the ear. Going all the way through the ear allows the blood to go out more places where just a hole in the top forces it to well into a bubble for you to sip up with the meter.

If you're not putting something 'hard' behind the ear when poking, the skin will just indent and not truly do much 'poking'. Some people use a medicine bottle filled with warm water behind it, others use the rice sock, even others use our fingers. Me, I use those little round cosmetic pads with my finger underneath the place where I poke. After test is done, I use the pad to put pressure on the pokie place then use it to pull the strip out of meter and throw it all away....nice, neat and easy.

GOOD LUCK! It WILL happen! Just keep working at it...
