New on Lantus low pre shot # what to do??

Hello everyone. First post here. My cat Rice started Lantus this week ( Tuesday ). My vet said not to shoot under 200. This morning I did a pre shot test and he was 128. We did not give him insulin. We tested him again about an hour after eating. He was 160. At 6 hours after he would have gotten the shot he was 212 and now before his PM shot he's 199.

Should we give his PM shot? Is it safe? He is on a half unit of Lantus.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

If you are going to be around to test go ahead and shoot...just try to catch a +3 or +4 before turning in for the night just to check where he is headed.

Thank you. We gave him his shot. I can wake up at any time to test him. Should I do that at +6 or +8? We'll definitely be checking in on him frequently tonight.
 
If you can get up for a +6ish test that would be great and give you an idea of how he handles a full dose on a lower than normal preshot numbers.

Quick question: what food are you feeding? With such a low dose, maybe you can tweak the diet and maybe not need insulin?
 
We switched him to a lo carb diet the day after he was diagnosed, 1/13. He now eats 3-3.5 oz of Merrick Cowboy Cookout in the AM and 3-3.5 oz in the PM.
 
138 at his +6. 178 now +11. Should he get his AM shot if I won't be here today to monitor him? Won't be back until his PM shot. What to do, what to do?
 
We decided not to give his AM shot again since we are new at this and especially since we can't watch him today. Going to speak to a doctor today and see what their take on it is. Ricey is pretty annoyed with all the ear poking yesterday and last night so I'm sure he'll be happy with a day alone to rest and relax.

He was pretty somber this morning, but I spied him on our kitty web cam playing with his catnip cigar. Even spied a bunny kick, so at least he's sort of playing. I think he's just annoyed with me.
