My 13 year old boy, Pinot, has blood sugar at 480. I've been feeding Fancy Feast Classic for at least 7 years, but he still got diabetes. Any suggestions on what else I can try?

Also, trying to figure out how to manage costs. Vet recommends ProZinc with U40 29G .3cc needles. Walmart has U100, and pharmacist says 29G is a thick needle and recommends 31G.

Any ideas on needles and where to buy ProZinc? (Can't get it at Walmart)

Today he is at vet to try to figure out "curve"

Fancy feast classic is what many of us feed. Sometimes cats are just prone to diabetes despite what we feed. Don't let your vet start you on a high dose... Starting dose is 1 unit and should be monitored at home and raised in 0.25-0.5 increments. Many vets start way too much. I use u40 syringes... They aren't too thick. You can use u100's but you would need a conversion chart to get the right dose. I personally prefer to just use the u40's.

Are you in the US or Canada? Your vet should have the ProZinc there.

There can be other factors that can contribute to diabetes. Any sort of infection such as UTI or dental issues can cause the glucose levels to increase. Did Pinot have a full blood work, urinalysis and dental examination done?

Other times things such as pancreatic issues, or hyperthyroid can affect proper insulin utilization in the body. For these conditions you would require separate tests that you would have to ask for....fPLI for pancreas and T4 for thyroid issues.

Some Prozinc users will use the U100 syringes. You would need to use a conversion chart to determine the correct dosing with U100 syringes if you are using a U40 Prozinc

I am in Canada and use the BD U100 syringes with 1/2 unit marking and they are 31 gauge. If you are in the US or UK one off the members will be able to tell you the best place for purchasing U100 syringes that are suitable.

One important step in keeping your kitty safe and determining what dose is best is to set up a spreadsheet. Instructions are here:

Also if you want to post in the Prozinc forum as well as they Health forum you will get responses from experienced Prozinc users:

Having senior blood panel done to see if there are other factors.

That is a good idea. You might ask your vet about adding in the pancreatic test and T4 test. These are not included in the seniors panel. Your vet can do a snap test for both the pancreas and T4 at their office. The pancreas test will only say "yes" or "no" and if positive won't give how high the number is, but it is still a good indicator. Since you are having the blood drawn for the senior panel it is a good idea to test for these 2 conditions at the same time, rather than end up having to do another visit and blood draw later.

Most of the websites that have feline meds will carry U40 syringes. You can also probably get them from your vet.

Just note that when getting insulin on-line one generally has to pay for overnight shipping with ice pack which at $20 or to listed price.
