I live in Taos New Mexico, and am wondering if there is anyone in my area who is in this community? I would love to know who might be nearby~
How does anyone ever manage having a diabetic cat and get to leave home from time to time? I'm a bit overwhelmed at the challenge of getting local help, since the vet who diagnosed my cat has different ideas about giving insulin. help!

Tracy,
I think you are going to have to make a decision....and then settle in with it.
It will help with your feeling overwhelmed etc.
Either go with the vet....or join in whole heartedly here.
With or without your vets 'permission'
Louis is YOUR cat. This is YOUR decision.
We talked on the phone last night. It is up to you. But a decision you must make.

In the meantime...whatever you are shooting etc....if we see your spread sheet we will be of some assistance to you. Without it we are working in the dark.

Let everyone know...you are shooting Lantus. 3-4 unit bid(twice a day) and present us with the numbers.
This is your best way of helping Louis.
Please begin to share the actual facts ok hon. We really do want to see what you have going on.
You are able to get blood. And tests.... so don't hold back. Get your game on. This is the day.

Tracy,

My vet did the same thing to me and put Lilly on to much insulin. She was put on 1.5 unit twice a day to start I think and she told me not to test her.
I did do that at first until I found this board. Starting asking questions and still do a lot. I also call one of the people here on the board when I have a problem who is here in my city.
Anyhow back to the vet. I had to take Lilly back there for pancreatitis and she said why do you have her on such a low dose of insulin? I said just what someone here on this board told me better to be safe than sorry, once you put it is you can not take it back out.
I am still very new to this and rely on this board a great deal because frankly I have been to two different vets and can not find one that knows what their doing when it comes to felines diabetes.
So you will see me here quite often and welcome.

getting the right kind of help!

I keep hearing a similar story to mine about how important it is to get educated about Louie's diabetes, since the vets cannot always be reliable! wow~

I just took a look at your SS and thank god you have reduced dose. Shooting 3.5units into a 124 pmps you will soon learn is just not done. Not without ton's of Louis data to back it up....and even then only if he is a very high dose kitty.
Which he I doubt is.
He is just one lucky kitty to have a mama who went with her gut and trusted us to help you care for him.
Good on the SS.

Tracy,

Just looked at your spreadsheet,OMG I thought he was on 3 unit once a day split up dose, wise not 3.5 twice a day. WTH was that vet thinking?
WOW
