Good morning! I am new "again" to this forum. Many years ago, I had a sugar cat named, Rusty. We were lucky enough to be put in contact with a local lady who had extensive knowledge of feline diabetes. This lady, and now friend, helped save Rusty's life and help him to live for many years after his diagnosis. He even went into remission!
I contacted this same friend the other day and to see if she could help me with my newly diagnosed boy, Winston. I was not surprised that she was still involved with this group. Thank you Karen N - some of you may know her
Winston was Diagnosed in early November. After making some mistakes (before I contacted Karen), we reset and started over. His numbers are on his spreadsheet (I am not sure if I filled it out correctly!). He was switched over to Frisky's and Fancy Feast pate as soon as he was diagnosed. He is on Lantus insulin twice a day. his dose right now is 0.5 units. We test at home.
I am wondering where I go from here. Do I keep him at this dose or should I increase? Do I do a curve first?

Hey Jennifer! This is Chris from the Facebook group. You need to start getting some tests in between the shots. Lantus dosing is based on how LOW it takes them, not the Pre-Shot. The Pre-Shot just tells us if he's high enough to give insulin at all!

We need to see at least 4 tests per day. The 2 Pre-Shots and at least 1 test somewhere mid-cycle on the AM cycle (if at all possible) and at least 1 "before bed" on the PM cycle. If you can't get mid-cycle tests on the AM due to work, then try to get more tests on the PM cycle.

If you don't work or work from home, getting more tests will help even more. Think of your spreadsheet like it's a puzzle. The more pieces (tests) you have sprinkled around, the easier it is to know what the whole picture is. If you only test at PS, that's like only having pieces filled in around the edges!

I'd hold the .5 for a few more days and get those tests in before going up. If you do work away from home, if you'll tell us your working schedule we may be able to come up with something that'll work for you.

Glad to see you here! I saw your comment on FB this morning but when I went to respond, it stated the message had been deleted.
I know the other member told you we couldn’t give dosing advice on FB, but she was wrong to steer you completely away!! You were not asking for specific dosing.
I had wanted to let you know that you are on track with everything you are doing thus far. I also mention what Chris did- get some mid-cycle tests. Doses from here on out are based off the cat’s nadirs. Without those, the admins here don’t be able to help much. The more data you can get, the better they can see patterns and such. I hope to see you pop back into FB, and say hi again! I’m sorry I didn’t get to you before the other member did. Here’s the link I was going to share with you on FB. This is under the Lantus page files. Don’t worry about TR right now. The SLGS protocol will tell you what numbers you are looking for how long you hold the dose, etc.

Thank you! I thought I did something wrong! lol I just want to help my boy! Testing more often definitely makes sense. I am going to start filling in those blanks tomorrow. Thank you for the link! That is very helpful! I will keep you posted

A small house-keeping note for when you have the time - in addition to updating your spreadsheet, it would be a big help to us if you can set-up your signature? It's basically a summary of the information we need about your cat to give advice. The spreadsheet and signature are the things we look at when asked for advice. It saves us asking you the same questions again and again especially when the question is time critical like stalling or low numbers. It also saves you the effort of giving us the information every time you post!

Here's how you can set-up your Signature:

• In the Menu, under your user name, click on Signature.
• Add info we need to help you:
  • Caregiver & kitty's name
  • DX: Date
  • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
  • Name of your meter
  • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
  • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
  • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
  • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
  • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
• Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
• There is a limit of two lines. You may separate info with commas, dashes, | etc.
• Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom.

If you could get some pm cycle tests in that would be very helpful. As you are doing SLGS, if you could do a curve sometime soon, that will help us see if he needs an increase……which it looks as if he does…but we need that curve. A curve is every two hours for 12 hours.
