I have a 5 year old cat that I have been trying to regulate for about 6 months now. She is TOO THIN! Not over weight like a lot of information is geared to. Vet recommended Hills m/d glucosupport of which I have been using. Is this food not helpful? It seems like BG would shoot up when using it. Have been mixing it with a Fancy Feast, seems to help. She occasionally has vomiting spells . Last one, I fed her small amounts of chicken baby food until she quit vomiting. Then mixed small amounts of m/d and Fancy Feast. BG readings seemed pretty good with this mixture. Bottom line she needs to gain weight.

Thankyou,
Julie

Hills MD food is too high in carb. Perscription food is not necessary. There's is nothing in it that is better for your cat. Your best bet is a low carb wet food such as fancy feast classic or Friskies pate. Here's a food chart. Choose foods under 10 percent carb https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

Can you post a log of her readings? We can help you set up a spreadsheet that can go in your signature.

I have combed that chart multiple times. I just don’t know what to choose. And am now stuck with a pile of m/d food.

Well you said you're already giving some fancy feast. As long it's a ff classic that's perfect. :)

The perscription food is guaranteed so you can return it for any reason for a money back guarantee. Just say she stopped eating it so you're sticking with low carb ff.

Unfortunately it was purchased from Chewy by the case? So not sure they will take it back if already opened.

Chewy has an incredible customer service policy. Tell them your cat won't eat the food. They will generally tell you to donate the unused food and will either refund your order or give you a credit. They are truly amazing.

If you have this food chart, it can ge quite overwhelming. Fancy Feast classics and Friskies have flavors that are low in carbs. They are the lower priced options. Tiki Cat, Weruva, and ZiwiPeak are premium foods that many people here use but the cost is higher. If you have a local store that stocks the high priced foods, you may want to get a couple of cans to make sure your cat likes the food. Often the customer service for the premium cat food companies will agree to send you a few cans to see if your cat will like their food.

Thank you for your input and I will see what I can do with the food. I have bought Tiki Cat and she has eaten it. May not be as speedy as m/d…..

As expensive as m/d. Not speedy.

Hi Julie and welcome. Can you tell us what insulin and dose you are giving your kitty please?
And what type of glucose meter are you using?
Sorry I haven’t replied sooner.
Lantus glargine pen. 1 unit every 12 hours.
I used the Libre sensor 3 times, 3rd time it came off half way through. @ $80 a pop this is EXPENSIVE! I bought a Relion Premier and have been using it. Not so sure I am having the best success with it. Vet wanted me to buy Alpha track but strips are expensive too. Ugh!!! I have taken her off of Hills m/d and am going to transition from Fancy Feast to TikiCat. She needs to put some weight on as well. Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Julie

/Hi Julie,
The ReliOn meter is absolutely fine. A lot of people here use it. And it’s much cheaper than the alphatrak meter.
Also our dosing methods are based on the human meter BGs.
I see you are using a pen to give the insulin. I would suggest switching over to using a syringe instead of the pen as you can then go up in 1/4 unit increments if you need to increase the dose.you can only go up in 1 unit increments with the pen.
The type of syringe you need is a U100 3/10 31 gauge, 8 mm with 1/2 unit markings on it. ReliOn has them at Walmart. Make sure you ask for 1/2 unit markings.
You can them use the Lantus pen cartridge that is in your pen. See below.

If you have taken your kitty off the hills md…especially the dry food, you may have to reduce the dose of insulin as the carbs will be lower.
Would you like to set up a spreadsheet and signature so that you can start documenting the data of the BGs and we can help you with the dosing?
Here is a link that has both SS and signature in it. If you can’t set it up I can ask @Bandit's Mom to help. You just need to ask.

I am going to switch to syringes. Several years ago I had a diabetic cat. It was so different the first time. I didn’t have to check BG at all. Just gave insulin! No special food either. Got her through for a long time to the point of discontinuing insulin as well.
Nelly has been on wet food for months. In fact my other three are too.
I will check into the spreadsheet tomorrow and let you know if I need help with it.
Chat tomorrow and thank you!
Julie
