My dear beloved 16 yr old kitty, Mister aka Mistear (he's Scottish Fold) has just been diagnosed with diabetes. My 1st vet visit is tomorrow. I am glad I found this site. I am mostly concerned about the food issue as he is finicky and only eats dry food and baby food. He's lost a lot of weight and has severe arthritis.
I am concerned with cost of specialty food for him. My other kitty loves cooked chicken and Mistear will occasionally eat that, any advice on this.

You can feed over the counter, low carb foods, such as Fancy Feast Classic pates and Friskies pates. For terrific information on feline nutrition, go to Cat Info and download the food list.

For routine feeding, anything with under 10% calories from carbohydrates is fine. For times when you might need to bring the glucose up, snag a couple of cans of Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers, plus some Karo syrup.

We don't advocate dry food, as it puts a strain on the kidneys, and is very calorie concentrated, often leading to obesity. If your cat is difficult to change foods, switching first to Evo Cat and Kitten dry, or Young Again 0 Carb (internet only) or Epigen 90, switched in gradually to avoid GI upsets, may be a good first step to do.

Hello and welcome to FDMB.

My Gracie is also a SF (so is her brother) and is diabetic. Can you give us some info on how he was dx? Was it just one test? Does he have symptoms like drinking and peeing a lot? How long has that occurred? Also, is the weight loss recent or does he have other stuff going on like chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism?

Hi there and Welcome!

You have found the best place a kitty with FD can be. Plenty of experienced folks to help you navigate the (temporarily) uncharted waters.

Hang in there - and hang in here.
