Tillie and Valentino

Member Since 2020
Hello everyone,

My name is Tillie and my sweet boy, Valentino, was diagnosed 2 months ago. He also just tested positive for IGF-I indicating Acromegaly. He's only almost 11 years old and has been very active and healthy until now. He weighs 10.9 lbs up from a norm of 10 lbs. His mother was Siamese. He's been constantly hungry and begging for food, and has been difficult to control his blood sugar. He is up to 3 units Prozinc / 2 x a day. It's been so helpful using the resources of this board the last few weeks so I thought I would introduce myself. Going to say hi on the Acromegaly board too.

thanks for everyone's involvement in this wonderful resource for new diabetic parents!!

Welcome Tillie and Valentino
He sure is a cutie
You have landed in the best place you can ever be.
I have to say members here know more about diabetes than most vets do.
If it wasn't for these experienced members here my cat would not be doing
as good as he is now
I am going to tag a member for you who's kitty has Acromegaly and is on prozinc
@JanetNJ
I'm sure once she sees the tag she will respond
Thank you @JanetNJ

  • It would be helpful if you can set up your signature
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

tap on your avatar where it says your name ,then hit profile page ,tap on that ,then go up to the very top, upper right hand side and tap on your name ,it will bring down a drop box, tap on signature, the signature will be under settings, tap on the signature then and you can start to add what I posted above, make sure you hit save ,
Welcome to the best place you could ever be and an awesome group of people

Tillie if you would like set up a spreadsheet ,that's what we use here to
track our cats BG , get advice whether to increase or decrease, etc
You can take a look at mine or others if you would like to
We also use syringes with half unit markings it makes it easier if you need to increase or decrease by 0.25 units

If you have trouble setting it up we have 2 members that will do it for you, just
ask.

I will also send you the link explaining how the spreadsheet works

Great thanks for the signature :cat:

Most of us use human meters such as the Relion Prime from Walmart
It's 9 dollars and 17.88 for the test strips
Used to use the Alpha Trak but the price of the strips were killing me
So I switched , you go through a lot of strips
I told my vet I couldn't afford it anymore and she was fine with it
Plus you don't have to order them off the internet, can just pick them up
at Walmart

Thanks so much! I already purchased the Alpha Trak but perhaps will switch at some point. Such good info here!
Welcome! The good news is diabetes is treatable, and they can live long healthy lives with it. Of course acro throws a monkey wrench into things... My cat was diagnosed with acro about a year and a half ago, but was diagnosed with diabetes about 4.5 years ago. So with having acro it's really important to test... your doses may get pretty high. At the moment my cat's dose isn't bad... around 6-7... but at one point it was 12.5 u of Prozinc twice a day. We've had cats on here with triple that. crazy. Hopefully you won't get to that point. What made you test for acro so soon?

Hi Janet, Thanks so much! I'll be very interested to look through your posts to see what your experience with acro has been. The reason we tested is I switched him to a new vet who had a lot more experience with diabetic cats and she picked up on large paws, broad head, the fact that he'd gained weight despite not being regulated at all, and that he was and still is ravenously hungry. She mentioned just checking photos and waiting on testing but I wanted to get to the bottom of his struggles sooner rather than later. I guess I was getting frustrated already with not getting him in good numbers. :-)

Thank you @JanetNJ your Jersey neighbor :bighug::cat:

You don't need the MRI to confirm the tumour, unless you are just curious or planning on getting treatment done. 295 is high enough, over 92 is considered positive. And there is no correlation between the IGF-1 number and the size of tumour or what the eventual size of dose will be. My Neko's IGF-1 was much higher (440), but her tumour was tiny - I did get a CT scan as part of treatment. And her dose never got above 8.75 units of Lantus. At the time, there were acrocats with lower IGF-1 numbers, larger tumours and larger doses.

I'll reply on your post on the acro forum too. That's probably a better place for questions on acromegaly specifically. If you want any help with dosing, getting that spreadsheet set up will be the first step.

Replied on the acro forum :-)

Welcome. I'm originally from East Brunswick NJ. Now in the Poconos.

My Ollie was acro. IGF 382. Repeat in 1 yr was 432 or so. I chose medical treatment for her. It controlled her symptoms very well. She got up to 9 units twice a day. Got her down to 4.5 units x2. She had just about every symptom plus other conditions.
