*new member* Looking for some reassurance♡

Hello! I am only about a month or so into treatments for my 9 year old boy, Professor. I was concerned about his weight-loss in Dec 2019 and had extensive blood work done, including diabetes testing. The results came back with no issues and it was frustrating. He was down to 12lb from 15lb (he's a big framed cat). I made changes at home continously, trying to make him comfortable and eating more.

It was in May 2020 that I'd had enough and took him to another vet for tests. This time he weighed a measly 9lbs and we got the results that he has diabetes. I started him on ProZinc right away and switched him to only Fancy Feast pate. I've seen a really nice improvement in his behavior. He hangs out with me alot more and seems more alert and peppy.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if cats can feel the difference after an insulin dose? Like do they feel better? I've never experienced diabetes so I don't know very much. I suppose I'm mostly looking for some comfort...I just want to know if he's feeling better. ♡thanks♡

I feel your concern. My cat went from 18lbs to 9lbs before we realized what was wrong :(. While I do not know for an absolute fact what my cat is feeling I do know that when a human diabetic's numbers are not right they feel bad and have various frustrating symptoms. Once the numbers are in line with the norm, they feel better. I can assume that it is the same for our furry friends. My Ducote used to jump on my lap every night and give me "neck massages" lol. When he was sick (before diagnosis and shortly after) he spent all of his time laying on the floor in the kitchen, crying and just waiting for someone to come in so he could try and get extra food. He also was having potty accidents and sleeping more than normal. His numbers are still out of line but he is starting to leave the kitchen and roam the house again. He no longer sits and cries for food, no potty accidents for a couple of weeks, and I finally starting getting neck massages again (I admit that I teared up at the first one after all of these months). I know that this is all signs he is feeling a bit better :cat:

I'm sure they MUST feel better. On insulin their bodies can utilize the nutrients in the food better, giving them better energy and overall feeling better. If we can help with anything just ask!
 
Oh, the Professor is so gorgeous! I definitely think they start feeling better once insulin is in their systems :) High blood sugars can make kitties, pups, people, etc. feel terrible and so having insulin in their systems helps get rid of those icky feelings by lowering those numbers and gets them feeling more like themselves again. It's great that he's feeling peppy again already!

I'm new here too and I an tell you that this site is full of the kindest and most helpful people who want the best for us and our kitties, I only wish I'd found it sooner but I feel like my Jonas is already benefiting from the help I've received here so far. Welcome to you both!

What a gorgeous boy.
I’m sure they feel better once that start to get the correct treatment. it is very common for diabetic cats to loose weight prior to diagnosis as their bodies can’t absorb all the nutrients in the food but once they start insulin they should start to gain weight slowly.
my Sheba got very thin in the beginning but regained all her weight and muscle.

It would help a lot if you could set up a spreadsheet when you can and a signature to tell us all about Professor.

I'm so glad your kitty is starting to feel better! It warms my heart when my guy hangs out with me too. This week I struggled with giving him insulin. I was puncturing wrong and insulin was coming out the other side. I'd feel like I was failing him. The last couple days have been better♡ I hope your kitty's numbers get to where they need to be soon.

They definitely feel better and know they need the insulin.
I love routine and when I come home from walking the dog my Mauer is standing ready in the kitchen for her BG test.
Initially I thought she would hide and we'd have fight every time. But she's ready and seeking me when it's time.
So I'm sure they know it helps :bighug:
