New member-Insulin or Bexacat

I am so thankful to have found this page. Just found out yesterday that our 14.5yr old kitty is diabetic (BG 428 and Glucose 3+) All other tests were normal with no UTI, kidney disease or ketones. My vet has given me two options of either the traditional insulin route or trying the Bexacat. We travel quite a bit and our 23 year old daughter who lives at home and is very capable can give her the injections or the once daily oral pill. Looking at cost, it seems the Bexacat is definitely more expensive up front but I like the less rigid schedule of it. Also hearing stories of cats getting worse on it and DKA. I can do blood glucose curves at home as well (ex vet tech). Also planning to change her diet. Anyone who started with Bexacat and then switched to insulin because you didn't like the Bexacat treatment plan?

Hello and welcome, what is your kitties name?

I do recall one member who started on Senvelgo (liquid equivalent to Bexacat), kitty started throwing ketones, so she switched to Lantus and not long after went into diabetic remission. Lots of information, discussion and experienced in this post: New Treatments for Feline Diabetes. It includes a list of pros and cons.

It's great that you already know how to do BG curves at home. You might want to start the diet change and see what impact it has on her numbers. Which insulin is the vet suggesting if you go that route?

Thanks for the reply! I read thru that post about the pros and cons and I'm leaning more towards the insulin treatment. Her name is Frankie and she was one of our very first foster failures. She was born here in our house and has never left! I'm starting the diet change now. Vet is suggesting Glarjine (sp?) for the insulin.

Glargine is the generic name for the brand Lantus - great choice if you go with insulin. It and Prozinc are the two long lasting insulins best for cats.
