Question- my boy was rushed into the vet yesterday with an abcess on his bottom. They said he had an anal sac infection and a fever. They lanced the area and gave him amoxi-drops. I always check his ketone levels and they are normal, and have been for over a year. Now they are in the small to moderate areas on the Walmart human test sticks. Is this because the infection and antibiotics are messing with his sugar levels? Will this get better? Is the small to moderate level something of concern and warrent a call to the vet at 10pm on a Saturday? He hasn't had ketone present in over a year and this is his first infection. Thank you very much for any help. This is my 1st post :) He is eating normal and water intake and sleepy time is higher because of the antibiotics and infection.

Did you "read" the strip at exactly 15 seconds? It continues to darken as each second goes by.

We usually say if more than "trace", it's a medical emergency but cat's with ketones usually look and act sick and usually aren't eating well.

Are you testing his blood glucose?

He is eating normal, drinking is a little more due to antibiotics and the infection. He seems to be doing fine. I held it in his stream and it lit up immediately. I held it the amount of time allotted and it stayed a color in between the small to medium, more on the small side if I had to guess. He's more sleepy because of the meds and lanced area draining.

How is your kitty doing now? Any more ketones? And has he recovered?

Thank you, for asking. He's only had 5 out of 10 days of his medication so I guess he isn't 100% yet. His ketone have went down considerably. He was in the small to medium area but as of last night he is at the trace marker. I'm hoping once his medication is completed that his glucose and ketone go back to normal. Before this we had his diabetes in remission and he hadn't had any ketone in almost a year.

With ketones in the picture you need to be feeding up to 1 1/2 times the usual amount of calories.
You don’t have a spreadsheet so I can’t see his numbers. Are you testing his BG frequently? And are you giving insulin again?
