Hi my name is Grace and I have a 16 years old cat Ball who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes.
I am really grateful to find this forum with you sharing all this valuable information and experience. I'm however still a bit overwhelmed and feel very helpless but I don't know where to even start asking.
What happened was my cat was hospitalized for a week as a suspected case of DKA but she developed complications with UTI and fluid buildup in the lung and heart. After discharging from the hospital she started to have diarrhea and vomiting then it's found that she has pancreatitis and was given another round of antibiotics to clear that.
For her diabetes, I'm giving her 2 units of Lantus twice a day and she's been establishing a pattern in the last week (4~26mm/l ~ sorry I'm still struggling with the conversions and measurement but this is what we use here).
But a few days ago when she started vomiting and diarrhea, her glucose level dropped quite low and I was advised to skip the injection last Friday night. As I was given a Freestyle Libre reader with a sensor, I haven't got a chance to learn taking blood samples yet. unfortunately the sensor expired on Saturday morning and due to her low level the previous evening, I decided to skip the injection on Saturday morning as well.
After I resumed injection in the evening, the reader showed her bg level as "HI", I guess it means it's so high that a number couldn't be shown. It remained "HI" throughout the night. I gave her another shot at 8am in the morning then the numbers started to come down but by 1pm the reader showed a "LO" which really freaked me out. I quickly gave her some glucose and food then the number gradually returned to 9 ~19 and went up again to 26 at 8pm last night. I gave her another shot but the reader continued showing "HI" again through out the night and it hasn't come down yet after I gave her another shot this morning at 8am. she's been drinking a lot of water all this time and the symptoms which made me send her to the vet two weeks ago returned and it feels like I'm back to square one.
I wonder if it's because I skipped two does on Friday night and Saturday morning so the effect that has been built up was broken ? Will it build back up again if I continue to shoot the same dosage again ? or I have to increase the dosage ? I tried asking my vet but the reply wasn't very helpful as I suspected if she knows enough to tell what direction we're going.
Anyone has any idea? I am trying to set up a spreadsheet but can't find the time yet because I'm struggling with force feeding and all the monitoring and shooting while giving her medication every few hours. it's a really exhausting and tough battle but I'm ready to take on it for my lovely darling cat.
